Our family of four will be traveling to New York for a week in July. We have two teenage boys. We know we will probably eat at Planet Hollywood and perhaps Hard Rock Cafe. Where are some great places to eat on a reasonable budget?
Inexpensive Places to EatIf you like turkish food, one of my favs is Sip Sak - it is cheap and they let you bring your own alcohol! (for a $5 corking fee)

Patsy%26#39;s Pizza has great gormet pizza and food and is priced decent. The Corner Bistro is cheap and a favorite NYC spot for all. Heartland Brewery, Iron Sushi - basically ';neighborhood joints'; woudl be your best bet. You%26#39;re mostly likely staying in a touristy part of town, so I woudl suggest venturing out of it to the quieter spots.
the website I suggested above will give you user reviews and a menu iwht dollar amounts... plus you can search by area and types of menus.
One last thing... NYC has so much more to offer than Planet Hollywood and the Hard Rock. While I have never been to either in NY, I have gone to them when I travel and you can definitely do much better here. It is pricey on it%26#39;s own, so only go if it is a ';must see';. Your budget can tgo further elsewhere.
Inexpensive Places to EatAlso go to Katz%26#39;s deli - it%26#39;s great and a %26#39;must%26#39; for all
get the pastrami and a hotdog with kraut!
Planet Holl. and Hard Rock are NOT inexpensive. They%26#39;re grossly over-priced!
The best deals for food in NYC are ethnic food. Try chinatown. Also, along 9th ave. in the 40s-50s lots of ethnic options from Thai to Asian Fusion. Papaya King is one of the best bargains in the city. 2 hot dogs and a drink for $2.75. (It%26#39;s just a snack bar though).
Here%26#39;s an older post about inexpensive dining. YOu%26#39;ll notice everyone says avoid Planet Holl and Hard Rock ;)

Thanks for all the help. Maybe we will skip Planet Hollywood and Hard Rock Cafe.
Here%26#39;s a tip I%26#39;d posted recently about an inexpensive way to have lunch in Midtown,
At 57th and Madison there is the IBM building. There is a beautiful atrium there with entrances on 57(next to Torneau) or on Madison close to 56th. You can get Sandwiches and go sit in there and have lunch when you are in that area. there are several places to get things to eat around there.
Marche Madison-58th between Madison and Park is one.
Theres also a place on 58th between 5th and Madison.
Also, next to the IBM building on Madison is the Sony building.
Between 56th and 55th. they also have an atrium open to the public.
You might just want to sit in the park, but if you feel like getting out of the heat these are good cheap options.
If you are in Chelsea there is The Dish, a reasonably priced high end diner on 8th ave. and 20th St.
Little Poland, on 2nd Ave and 12th Street is a polish diner, very no frills with amazing polish food. Think Blintes, Potato pancakes, Perogis, You can eat yourself sick for about $10 each.
There are also alot of inexpenive options in the East Village.
Try Gnocco for Italian.
And you can always stop into a deli or grocery store and get some sandwiches and drinks or even a rotisserie chciken, some potato salad and perhaps some fruit to munch on in a park - and there are parks and deli%26#39;s all over the city. Enjoy.
Ta. MMM!
Like the persons before me said, those two restaurants are quite expensive for the quality of food you get!! If you want burgers, you could go to the Burger joint in the Parker Meridien Hotel . They are great and not that expensive.
There%26#39;s a mexican place called El Cantinero on University place near 12th street where it is not expensive and super good.
If you get there early before the lunch crowd, because there is lots of people, you could eat out at the Shake Shack in the Madison park (corner of 23rd and Madison)
When I get tired of eating in restaurants and long for healthy food, I go to Pax. There%26#39;s one on Park avenue south at the corner of 23rd. They serve soups, salads and sandwiches. They are really good.
You can get good pizza at De marco%26#39;s pizzeria (146 west Houston at the corner of McDougal)
I%26#39;m not an advocate of chains, either, but if they don%26#39;t have PH or HRC where they live, and they think the boys would like the atmosphere, why not?
Someone recently posted about getting a discount somewhere for (I think) one of them, they ate almost all their meals there with their kids and everyone was happy. I%26#39;ll try to find the link.
Thanks for all the great information!! We are very excited for our trip to New York. We have written many of the suggestions down. Hopefully they will be easy to find once we are there. With great appreciation!
One thing I did before we left is make a list of all the places we wanted to go - restaurants included, with both the street address and the nearest cross streets. It took a while, but it was invaluable - we were able to find every place we wanted to go without a lot of trouble. If you don%26#39;t have one, I highly recommend picking up a laminated street map of Manhattan. My sister picked one up at Barnes and Noble, and we used it constantly!
