I just read about getting a greeter when coming to NYC. Can anyone tell me what this is all about?

I am coming to town the last week of August with my mom and my daughter. We will be there for a week dropping my daughter off at college and also doing some sight seeing. (Mom%26#39;s first visit) Am looking for something fun and interesting to do with my mom - if anyone can give me info on this greeter thing I would really appreciate it.
