Biking the Brooklyn bridge

I was interested in biking the Brooklyn bridge but wanted to do it alone not with a tour group. Where could I rent a bike and also how safe is if to ride a bike in NY city. I have seen people almost get run over by cars on foot, I can only imagine what it would be like on a bike.

Biking the Brooklyn bridge

Actually, since there is a dedicated bike path (up on the north side of the elevated wooden walkway; the south side is for pedestrians -- do NOT consider biking on the asphalt roadway!!!!!), bicycles are safer on the BB than they are most places in the city.

Always remember that bicycles in New York City are subject to the Vehicle and Traffic Law, just as cars are. This means that bicycles are supposed to stop at red lights (yeah, I know they don%26#39;t -- that is why so many cyclists get hurt, they disregard the law), ride with traffic on one-way streets, and even signal all turns.

There is actually a provision of the VTL that requires bicycles to have bells, but I have never seen this enforced. On the other hand, anyone who rides a bike at night without lights is not only violating the law, he is also being an utter fool.

I thought this was a good Manhattan bike map. Might be of use to you. :)

Found this on a website

Central Park, where you can zoom to your heart鈥檚 content. Uptown, in Riverside Park, the west side promenade between 72nd and 110th Street, with its sweeping Hudson River views, is glorious in the early morning and spectacular at sunset. The East River Bikeway runs south from 14th Street to Wall Street 鈥?the path snakes along the East River Park all the way to the Financial District. Downtown, the Hudson River Bike Path leads to the Hudson River Park Promenade, where cyclists can explore Wall Street, and then head across the Brooklyn Bridge for the breathtaking skyline view, to Prospect Park鈥檚 peaceful greenery. In fact, most of the city鈥檚 bridges have easily accessible bike lanes now. a group and ride, or rent a bikes by the hour and explore solo.

Bike Rentals

Central Park Bicycle, 2 Columbus Circle /Broadway at 59th St., 212/541-8759). You can also rent a bike at the Boathouse in Central Park

Take the upper part of the bridge, but watch for pedestrians b/c they will out number you and will go into (and stand in) the bike lane. I%26#39;ve biked it myself and have seen other bikers hit pedestrians and not even stop! but it is a great ride and provided you look both ways, you will be fine. The bike path on the west side is great and much nicer/ safer than riding midtown on the east side. central park is big, so you%26#39;ll also see more on the bike.

you won%26#39;t be far from it, so take the extra step and take your bike on the Staten Island ferry - it has some great views!

There are a lot of bike rental places. If you%26#39;re worried about biking from Central Park or midtown, rent further downtown. Gotham Bike Shop %26amp; Metro bikes on Canal or 14th st. appear to be the closest options to the bridge on this list.

No way no how would I bike on the streets...those people are suicidal :))) My son actually got hit by a bike while crossing the street. He was behind me in a huge group crossing and the bike rider tried to stop but managed to stop by hitting my son. The whole group of people let out a collective gasp and everyone was asking him if he was ok....which he was thankfully. The bike rider apologized and looked visibly shaken up.

They ride full out fast on the Brooklyn Bridge and do not slow down for walkers who happen to stray over the yellow line.
