My husband and I will be in New York for our first visit in November. We are looking for a hotel well located for museums, theatre etc. We want to spend about $US350 per night. Any suggestions welcome.
Hotel recommendations please
I like the upper west side, a great residential neighborhood with lots of terrific shops and restaurants. Excellent transit access to easily get to and from Broadway theaters and east side museums.
Be sure to read the tripadvisor reviews. Here are some hotels to take a look at: Lucerne, Excelsior, Beacon, Belleclaire, On the Ave.
Hotel recommendations please
People have a lot of good things to say Upper West Side. I prefer Murray Hill and Midtown East.
I think that Marriott East Side is one of the nicer hotels for the money and it is right on 4,5.6 Subway lines that get you to the Met, Whitney, Guggenheim and you are in easy walking distance to MoMA.
The Broadway theaters are located in midtown west (west 40s and west 50s). MOST of the museums are located on the upper east side (east 70s-90s). There are some exceptions like MOMA (modern art) that would be nearish the theaters. So it%26#39;s really impossible to be within walking distance of both.
So then it depends on the type of ambiance you want. The upper east side is a quiet, upscale area with limited hotel options but the Surrey Hotel is really nice, has suites with kitchens and should be within your budget.
The upper westside that Bettina mentions is across the park from the museums (and has the Mus. of Natural History) and more hotel options which she%26#39;s listed. Most will fit your budget. But this area while nice and residential is not really walking distance of either the theaters or most museums (but our transit system is great). Probably the nicest hotels in the area are On the Ave and the Lucerne.
The Michelangelo is a really lovely hotel within a walk of the theaters. The Blakely is another nice smaller hotel with some suites with kitchens. If you want to be in midtown, I think those 2 are ideal.
Didn%26#39;t realize you had many more answers here

How about the Library Hotel on 40th and Madison, or the Elysee on 54th between Madison and Park???
I dont know if they fall within your budget, but think so. And a much better neighborhood than the upper west side.
Aside from the fact that I love the UWS, I was thinking it%26#39;s a straight shot by subway or bus to theaters, and a straight shot to the Met Museum on the crosstown bus. Whiz, as soon as I posted I thought about the Michelangelo too. It%26#39;s midtown so walking distance to lots of stuff. To reach the UES you%26#39;d have to make one subway connection, which is easily done but still not a straight shot. But the room itself might be much nicer at the Michelangelo than the UWS hotels.
