I%26#39;m planning on investing in a new SLR digital camera and wondered if it might be best to wait until my NYC trip in September.....any suggestions on where I can get a good deal and is there is great difference in prices compared to the UK?
Digital camerasI%26#39;ve heard that electronics in the U.S. are cheaper than in Europe, not even accounting for recent exchange rate changes. Add in the strength of the pound and it should be pretty good.
Go to www.bestbuy.com or www.circuitcity.com to see what U.S. prices are and compare with your local prices.
If you decide to buy here, both of those stores are in Manhattan. The former on 23rd Street and 6th Avenue and the latter on 14th Street between Broadway and 4th Avenues (Union Square South). J%26amp;R is another popular store. It%26#39;s near the WTC but I forget the exact street. Google it if interested.
Digital camerasAnother thing I%26#39;ll add is that you will see dozens of stores, especially in the tourist areas, that seem to be offering great deals on electronics.
DO NOT BUY EXPENSIVE ELECTRONICS FROM ONE OF THESE STORES!!!!
You will most likely be getting ripped off in one way or another. Only buy expensive electronics from stores that have been okay%26#39;d by people on this forum or other locals.
Besides J%26amp;Rs, most reputable electronics stores in New York are the same national chains found across the U.S.
Hey BB27 - I%26#39;m looking at getting the Nikon D50 but tbh the price difference is negligable (sp) Have a look at www.bhphotovideo.com and also www.jr.com to compare prices - only go to a reputable shop like the two I%26#39;ve mentioned don%26#39;t be tempted by the shops in the TS area - their deals are too good to be true :)
Do not forget B %26amp; H Photo.
www.bhphotovideo.com
Check their website, they are closed Friday night %26amp; Saturday for the Jewish sabbath, and on specific holidays.
Hi
I agree with NYCgirl, I buy all of my camera equip./film/memory cards at B%26amp;H...I find their prices to be low and IMO they have the most knowledgeable salesclerks.
I would suggest you do your homework first and decide what you want. Then check prices online at the main stores here. In addition to b %26amp; H there%26#39;s J %26amp; R Computer downtown. Here%26#39;s a thread with some more info

Only shop at B%26amp;H, J%26amp;R, or, as a new addition, Adorama.
You can%26#39;t go wrong with these three dealers.
BB27
last fall I bought my first digital SLR. A Canon Rebel.
I%26#39;ve been really happy with it.
I got it at Adorama on 18th st. Between 5th and 6th.
I%26#39;ve been back in there many times and they are always very nice and extremely knowledgable.
I%26#39;ve never been to B%26amp;H but their reputation is flawless.
For this kind of an investment I would stick with one of these two stores. Their prices are pretty much the same.
B%26amp;H and Adorama (18th between 5th and 6th) are your places.
Good luck finding anyone who knows what they%26#39;re talking about at J%26amp;R. Good place for CDs only, as far as I%26#39;m concerned.
I%26#39;ve even bought used lenses for my Canon Rebel at Adorama and have been thrilled with them (and the savings!)
dont be put off by the dusty appearance
And, for my fellow NY photo enthusiasts - If you%26#39;ve never been to B%26amp;H - you have to check it out, if only for the cool conveyor belt system!
One of the owners of B %26amp; H is a friend of my boss, and he stopped by Headquarters to say hello. I met him, and we had a very interesting conversation. He said that when he first went into the camera business, he was told by everyone he knew that the only way to do it was the shady way you find in those places along Fifth Avenue or near Times Square. He tried that for a while, but -- being fairly religious -- the guilt was just too much for him, and so he determined that he would ignore all the advice that he was getting and that he would run a scrupulously honest store. His business took off as a result, and so now (both because of his natural inclination, and the success that it brings) the strictest honesty is the unbreakable policy of his business!
