Hi there! I need your expert help / opinion in planning this very brief itinenary. We will be arriving at Newark Airport on July 15 at 11 a.m. and will spend the night at the Sheraton by the airport. The following day we will be picked from the hotel to do a 10 day east coast tour. As our time is very short in NYC (we do a city tour the next day with the tour before heading for Philadelphia), we would like to go to see the Liberty Statue and Ellis Island as soon as we arrive in Newark. We would also like to go to the 42nd street and feel the ';atmosphere'; in NYC.
We would like to do this as soon as we check in to the Sheraton at the Airport and take whatever public tranportation you suggest / recommend. There are 4 of us in the group. Which is the fastest way to get to the Liberty Statue and how do we get to the 42nd street from there? What is the last tranportation hour from NYC to Newark? Also, is there anything else we could squeeze in
to see with this schedule? Any nearby bargain shopping areas and children%26#39;s book and toy shop in the vicinity where we are heading for?
Would appreciate your help.
Thank you.
Need help with itinenary for short trip to NYC
I would check the hotel web site to see if they offer free shuttle to/from the airport and would probably check in (or stow bags at hotel if its too early to check in), take shuttle back to the airport where you can connect with Airtran. You can take Airtran to the Newark Airport rail station, and pick up NJ Transit to Penn Station NY (make sure you dont get off the train at Penn Station NEWARK). When you arrive, you will be at 34th Street between 7th/8th Avenues.
From there, you can walk or take the 1 or E train UPTOWN to 42nd Street.
Another option is to take Airtran to Newark Penn Station, pick up the PATH train and follow the map to transfer to the PATH train to the World Trade Center (I think you have to connect for the Journal Square train, and then again at Pavonia for the WTC train which may be too complex! But, if you do this it will bring you downtown to the statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
I know I%26#39;ve given you complex info and someone may have a simpler method (like taking a cab from your hotel into Manhattan!) but that would depend on budget. You may be better off arranging for a car service to pick you up and drive you around for the day, which is probably a lot cheaper if you arrange with a Newark car service through your hotel.

Thank you evening for your reply.
Making a trip to see the Liberty Statue seems like a lengthy affair and I wonder if I have the time to do it at all. I have been recommended to do the following in NY.
1. South Street Sea Port
2.Central Park
3. Rockefellar Center
4. Greenwich Village
As we will be coming from Newark after checking in the hotel, how can we get to South Street Sea Port from Newark by public tranportation. There are 2 of us traveling.
Is taking the ferry ride to Staten Island shorter in time as opposed to
using the Circle line cruise? If so, how do I get to use the ferry from South Street Seaport?
I am trying to as much as I can with this short time frame because we have to return to spend the night in Newark. I assume the last place for the evening will be in Greenwich Village.
What do you think of the places I want to see above and any suggestions/recommendations on what else I should do/see will help tremendously.
Thanks in advance!
You should be able to get to the Jersey City circle line ferrt to Ellis Island without having to come into Manhattan first. Then visit there, and take the ferry to Battery Park.
Check out the Ellis Island sites on the web, and ellisislandtours.com may be giving tours the day you%26#39;ll be available. I took a tour with them last weekend and it was sensational. Ta. MMM!
oops - meant ferry - not ferrt
Thank you MMM510 for the tip.
I will check it out right now.
