safety

we are planning a trip to new york city and would like to know if the herald square hotel is in a safe area? thanks for any input

safety

West 31st Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues? Heavens yes, that is safe. Just about anything you are likely to visit anywhere in New York City is safe. New York is the safest large city in America. Doesn%26#39;t everyone know that by now?

For reference with Oklahoma, you might be interested in knowing that according to the latest FBI statistics, last year the per capita rate of violent crime in Oklahoma City was 32% higher than it was in NYC, while in Tulsa the per capita rate was 84% higher. You are thus wise to visit the relatively safe largest city in this state rather than the considerably more crime-ridden largest cities in your own.

safety

Hi rush,

We returned from our first trip to NYC last week and we live in a town with one traffic light! I never ever felt unsafe, in fact I felt far safer then I ever do in downtown Cincinnati. Even out walking at night was never a problem because there are so many people out on the streets. The only place I felt a bit uncomfortable was in Time Square at night...it was packed and I worried about my purse and getting separated in the crush of people.

Have a wonderful time! We can%26#39;t wait to go back!

I visit Manhattan every year for a couple of weeks and walk around most of the city. I have never felt unsafe. I do use a cab to get back to the hotel late night, but that is more out of laziness than fear. Have a wonderful time!

Thanks so much for the input!! I will be traveling with my best

friend and her daughter. My husband just wants to make sure

that we will be OK. We live in a small community of about 1500

people and we don%26#39;t even have a stop light, just a four way stop

sign in the middle of town.lol I am so looking forward to this trip!

I read the forum everyday and appreciate all the help offered by

this site. Thanks again!

It%26#39;s a safe area and very convenient, it%26#39;s just not pretty. I%26#39;d recommend staying in a residential neighborhood rather than a business district, where the side streets can be deserted at night. In the residential neighborhoods you%26#39;ll find better choices for restaurants and shops that are NOT geared to tourists. My favorite area is the beautiful upper west side. It%26#39;s fun and safe to explore at all hours. Transit access is wonderful, you%26#39;re just 10 minutes to Times Square. I%26#39;d definitely consider hotels on the UWS over Herald Square. Take a look at the Lucerne, Excelsior, Beacon, Belleclaire, On the Ave. Or Daisiegee%26#39;s favorite, Jack %26amp; Judy%26#39;s B%26amp;B (www.jacksbandb.com).

I agree with Bettina. The area around the Herald Square is certainly safe but it%26#39;s not the prettiest area of the city and it%26#39;s got a heavy concentration of tourist-centered places since it%26#39;s near the Empire State building and Macy%26#39;s. I too think you%26#39;d have a better time in a more attractive/less touristy location. The upper westside is a good idea but there%26#39;s also Murray Hill, still in midtown (and not far from the Herald Square) but a bit less hectic. The Murray Hill East Suites, the Affinia Dumont, the Shelburne Murray Hill are some all suite hotels in that area.

I would agree with Murray Hill and would also add Midtown East for first time visitors.

I have to say that on my next trip I%26#39;m thinking of UWS!
