Any information on the Rockaways. visiting there and long Island. How are the beaches in July. What kind of people live there?
Rockaways
Hi,
I live in Rockaway! We are very social and community orientated. Our community was hit hard by 911 and then the plane crash of flight 587 but we shall overcome!
There is an exquisite - Tribute Park- on the bay side of Beach 116th Street. It includes a huge columned structure topped with stained glass,...with the names of the community members we lost etched in the dome. Beach 116th street IS the local shopping district with lots of cute shops and places to get ice cream ,snacks, as wella as beach going neccessities.
Rockaways%26#39; beaches are beautiful, %26amp; probably rate near the top of the list as the best in the world! You can go surfboarding on specific beaches or just enjoy the surf of any beach along the Atlantic Ocean OR there is the serenity of Jamaica Bay. No matter which direction.. it%26#39;s always a short walk! If your looking for more action on the water, there is a place you can rent jet ski%26#39;s in the next town over, across the bridge.
We have an artist alliance / gallery at Fort Tilden, (our local National Park). There are great sea scape paintings and maritime things to experience. If u like the outdoors, the park itself is a great place to explore with walking tours and nature talks and walks. if you are into sports, there is always a ball game going on there too!
The landscape is long and narrow and the streets are very easy to navigate... as we are on a peninsula. The streets go in number order from about Beach 1st Down.... to Bch 1st Street and there are only 3 cross streets. Parking can be hard sometimes.
There are a few nice restaurants in the area, but the night life is limited to the local taverns with the ';usuals';. If you are single you won%26#39;t want to hang out here and I wouldn%26#39;t advise you to. Nothing bad, just not where the elite meet. (There are no ';Clubs'; here anymore). If there%26#39;s no traffic, there are unlimited choices ...as NYC is only 20 minutes away. There is also the train station on Bch 116th St., where you can get the famous '; A Train,'; to take you into the City or Brooklyn or Queens and connect to anywhere you might want to go. Brooklyn has can be cool and has some good night spots too, but be carefull where you go at night.
Staying with relatives in Rockaway would be your best bet , if u have any, ...as saddly there are no hotels here. If I wasn%26#39;t staying out on Long Island, I would stay over the bridge in Howard Beach. Not sure about Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn. It%26#39;s only 5 min away and worth checking out. It%26#39;s the Comfort Inn I think, NOT the GOLDEN GATE ! (that has a reputation). The neighborhood is pretty good. Wherever you stay, I%26#39;m sure it will be filled with fun. I hope I have helped.. Have a great time!

Are there still those wonderful big old homes where people used to get a room or suite of rooms for a time period? What ever became of those gigantic houses?
