Need a guide book for a soon-to-be local

I have a friend that is moving to NYC and I wanted to get him a guide book or book for the city. I found the usual Fodors, Frommers, one entitled New York City Walks, etc. I was wondering if anyone could suggest a good book telling things to see, do, restaurants, etc geared for a person that is actually living in the city. Any ideas?

I%26#39;ve been living in the City for over 35 years - and use (frequently) the Blue Guide City Guide New York a lot. It covers not just Manhattan, but all 5 boroughs. Ta. MMM!

The Zagat guide for restaurants has also been a staple ';must have.'; Depending on how much you want to spend (or maybe pool resources with some other friends), a basket of books/maps etc. No one will do it all.

To tell you the truth, this forum is better than any guide book. Any question that your friend has will be answered right here! Give it a shot, but you need to be very specific in your questions.

the time out new york guidebooks are great. so is the magazine itself, which is chock-full of events/shows/films/goings-on about town, so even a subscription to that mag might be fun!
