Rental Car Pickup Location

Hi,

I want to drive from NY City to Boston in a few weeks time. While searching the car rental sites I notice that picking up your car from NJ is sometimes half the price of picking of from NY. so....my question is this...can anybody suggest a location outside of the city that I could get a train to from grand central in under 45 mins, that is not too far and that would enable me to obtain a much cheaper rental rate ?

Dont ask for much do i........... : )

Do you have any preference on a car rental company?

You can look at prices picking up the cars at one of the airports. Newark airport is in New Jersey. Closest airport to Manhattan is La Guardia (LGA). But I%26#39;ve heard some of the rental cos. will only allow airport pickups to those arriving on a flight. Many NYers were going out to the airports for just the reason you mentioned.

Do you realize there%26#39;s lots of public transport between NYC and Boston including bus, plane and train. And before you say you want to see the bits inbetween, if you go the most direct/fastest route, you won%26#39;t see much but highway. If you have some extra time to meander and make stops, that%26#39;s another story.

Check out rentals in White Plains New York. You can get there in less than 45 minutes by train. Since you are going to Boston you won%26#39;t have to fight traffic if you left from the city or New Jersey

Thanks for all your suggestions.

I have no preference in terms of rental company and do intend to meander and stop as I travel as will be in no particular hurry.

There is a Hertz Local Edition Location at 135 Greene Street, the Harborside FInancial Center, in Jersey City about two blocks from the Exchange Place PATH stop. You can take a Subway train to the WTC stop and then catch a PATH train from the WTC stop and ride it to Exchange Place.

Hertz Local Edition rents for less than airport locations.

Here is a link to the Harborside Location:

Rates will depend on the time you keep the vehicle, if it%26#39;s over a weekend, where you intend to drop it off, etc, I did a rate check for several different cars renting from July 13 - July 20 (One week) picking it up at the Harborside location and dropping it off at Boston Logan and the rates came up as $370 - $400 (unless you want a luxury car) which includes unlimited mileage.

Good luck!

Be careful of insurance. It often doubles the price of a car rental. Last year I had family from the UK who booked a rental car through

鈥irline-network.co.uk/carhire/鈥?/a>

and it was far cheaper than anything I could find on this end. It included all insurance. They were looking for a people mover though. Don%26#39;t know if that affected things.

They have both airport and non-airport locations for pick up and drop off on that site.

Modcon, thanks for all that effort. Will check that now.

I did check out collecting at white plains instead of JFK and it less then half the price. Amazing.

No problem!

When it comes to insurance the only one you might even want to consider is the Loss Damage Waiver, but only if it%26#39;s reasonably inexpensive (which at $23/day it really isn%26#39;t) and if you aren%26#39;t covered in any other manner.

Check with your auto insurance company to see if they cover rental cars, and to what extent. Then check with the credit card you are going to use to see if they offer any additional coverage. If they both do then in all liklihood you won%26#39;t need any additonal insurance.

Have fun and good luck!

Thanks again modcon, and thanks NYwhizz, you seem to be answering all my NY queries !!
