New York to Niagara falls - HELP!!!I would suggest that you get a good map!
Here%26#39;s a very good website about tourism in New York State.

Where are you staying on Long Island, and why are you staying there, if you don%26#39;t mind me asking? Is this your first trip to NYC?
Niagra Falls is about 450 miles (750 kilometers) from New York City. You can fly there or take a bus, or rent a car if you so choose, but personally, I wouldn%26#39;t want to drive that much on a vacation.
For ideas on touring with kids, here is a collection reports from families with younger kids. Borrow some ideas!

They will give you a jumping-off point. Great reviews, honest opinions. Most were first-time visitors and most are 3-6 day visits.
New York to Niagara falls - HELP!!!Where on Long Island are you staying (and why?) Will you have a rental car? Do the kids like long car trips? Niagara Falls is VERY far (like 7 hours) by car. There are relatively inexpensive airfares from JFK to Buffalo NY (close to Niargara Falls) on Jet Blue (jetblue.com) but even if you fly, staying overnight is really best.
The best way to get to NYC from Long Island is usually by train.
Hello again,
Yes, is our first time in NY, the reason we stay in Long Island is that a have a friend home available (50 minutes by train to Manathan Penn station) over there, and when i see the list prices in NY hotels, i really feel lucky.
I plan to rent a car, only to be use out of NY, my childs have NOT problem with long drives. BUT the idea is to stop on our way in nice places.
Thanks again,
Marcelo %26amp; Family
I have to say, 50 mins from NYC is not the same as staying IN NYC. I suggest you book at least 2 nights IN Manhattan as a compromise.
One idea to get ideas for places to stop is go to mapquest.com Put your starting town in (you never said where on Long Island) and Niagara Falls (you should stay overnight) and see the route. There are some beautiful lake areas in upstate NY (but these get quite busy in summer). When are you coming?
Skaneateles is a lovely town as is Ithaca on Cayuga Lake. If you%26#39;re doing this trip this summer, you should think about booking some hotels/motels in advance.
Here%26#39;s an excellent article from the NY Times on visiting Niagara Falls (you will have to register for free, probably to view it).

Hi
I like any way to have some suggestions to important points on my way to niagara falls, you know...tourists places ect%26#39;..
Marcelo
We loved our route from the NY area to Niagara Falls and back - we like to take our time, so on the way out we overnighted at Watkins Glen - your kids will LOVE it - make sure you start from the TOP (this is very important - there is a bus that takes you up there) - you walk/hike down a pathway alongside a beautiful gorge. Breathtaking.
When you are in Niagara Falls see everything - spend at least 2 nights - we loved the Maid of the Mist, Cave of the Winds, the tour on the Canadian side where you step BEHIND the falls... our daughter (around 9 at the time) loved the little museum that had all the crafts that people had used to go over the falls, there is a little trolley that takes you from point to point around the falls - we stopped at just about every point, then you wait for the next trolley to take you on - Niagara Falls is one of my favorite places in the world so sorry to rant on and on...
Our stop on the way back to the New York area was an overnight in Corning with a visit to the Glass Museum (more interesting than it sounds).
I guess you could head straight for the Falls in one day and not stop overnight, depends on how much of your 10 days you want to spend, these are just suggestions.
Warmwinds%26#39; suggestions of Watkins Glen %26amp; Corning as stops along the way to Niagara are wonderful ones!
To give you a better idea of what%26#39;s available at the Glass Museum for children, see

For a truly different kind of place to stay en route, check out the Caboose Motel in Avoca, NY -- a tiny town northwest of Corning

Here%26#39;s a Trip Advisor review of the Caboose Motel with a couple of pictures. It is not at all fancy, but it%26#39;s a a rare chance to spend the night in an old-fashioned train caboose :-)

Hi,
I have heard good things about the locations already mentioned. I%26#39;ll add a couple more.
Howe%26#39;s Caves near Cobbleskill, NY. www.howescave.com
and
If your kids like American Baseball, go to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY.
As for Niagara Falls, I just came back from a 3 day trip there myself!
In case you are not too familiar with the location, there are actually two cities of Niagara Falls. One is in Ontario Canada and one is in New York. They are across the ';Rainbow Bridge'; from one another. Most people that go to the Falls, go to the Canadian side. You get the best view from there, and the park along the edge of the falls is beautiful. It is very nicely landscaped.
If you are traveling into Canada, be sure to have the proper documentation. You may get into Canada ok, but passing back through customs into the US may be more difficult if you do not have everything in order.
In addition to the previously mentioned Falls sites, we also went to the IMAX movie of the Falls. This building is shaped like a pyramid. The movie is about 45 minutes long and is fun to watch on the giant IMAX screen.
Next door to the IMAX is a glass making factory outlet. I%26#39;m sure it pales in comparison to the Corning tour, but if you do not get a chance to go to Corning, you may want to stop in there to watch the demonstration. It is free.
Enjoy your trip!
