Is a day trip to Montauk from NYC possible?

Hi,

I%26#39;ve been living in NYC for the past year and will be moving back home to Ohio to complete school. My friend and I are hoping to travel to Montauk sometime within the next month. We are hoping that we can hop on the LIRR and make a day of it.

My questions are:

Where is the LIRR station in relation to the beach, lighthouse, and just the town in general?

Is everything within walking distance? If not, is there a place to rent bicycles or a car?

Is it possible to just spend a day, or should we plan on staying the night?

The LIRR station is not too far from a section of the beach and town. It%26#39;s pretty far to the lighthouse. Not sure about bike rentals but found this listing for one online. Why not phone them.

There are taxis in Montauk and lots of people use those.

It is possible to spend a day, but you%26#39;d probably have a better time if you could spend the night. The trip is at least 3 hrs. in each direction. Don%26#39;t know if you realize the trains aren%26#39;t very frequent (except for Fridays). Here%26#39;s the shed.

The other option (although more expensive) is the Hampton Jitney (hamptonjitney.com)

Whether you do a day or an overnight, try to do it during the week. Hotel/motel rates should be less and it won%26#39;t be quite so busy. On weekends, many of the motels require a min. 2 night or more stay.

I agree with the above post. It is a 3 hour trip out to montauk from NYC so you might be better off spending the night if possible. Whenever i go into the city, i usually take the Hampton Jitney. It%26#39;s $51 round trip and they drop you off right in the center of town in Montauk.

Pretty much everything in montauk is walking distance. The center of town is about 5 blocks and the beach is about 3-4 blocks from the center of town. However, it is 6 miles from town to the lighthouse so you%26#39;re better off taking a taxi to and from. The montauk bike shop does rent bikes, however that is quite a bike ride and it has a few big hills. Unfortunately there are no car rental places in montauk. The taxis are about $6-8 dollars, depending on where you are going.
