Hi, it%26#39;s hard to believe I haven%26#39;t been sightseeing in NY before now, but I%26#39;m taking my first day trip to NYC this week with some friends. While they%26#39;re hitting museums, I%26#39;d like to go clothes shopping. I hear Soho is the place to go for original clothes. I%26#39;m looking for things I can%26#39;t get at home -- don%26#39;t want Macy%26#39;s or H%26amp;M, and I%26#39;m pretty sure I can%26#39;t afford Madison Ave.
I%26#39;m concerned, though that Soho is too far out of the way. We%26#39;ll be in the Central Park and Times Square areas. Are there other unique/funky clothing stores in those areas? Or is it easy enough to get to Soho, and how should I get there? I%26#39;m assuming that clothing boutiques are more expensive than Macy%26#39;s, but I don%26#39;t want stores where the cheapest item is $100 or more.
I have restaurant questions, too, but I%26#39;ll start another thread for that.
Any advice is appreciated.
Unique clothing stores besides soho
First of all, if you are intent on staying just in the Times Square area you won%26#39;t find what you are looking for. Soho is not that far, a few subway stops away, so please do not limit yourself, things are not that far away.
Soho can be very expensive or not so expensive, so be prepared to stop %26amp; shop, so to speak. NOHO/Nolita are also great areas for one of a kind items, sometimes pricey, sometimes not, you have to look. I would take the train to Canal Street and walk north on Broadway, there are so many stores it will boggle your mind. Once you hit Prince %26amp; Spring Streets just explore the area.

Unique clothing stores besides soho
NY Magazine (nymetro.com) has a pretty good listing of stores by neighborhood. Why don%26#39;t you have a look at their shopping section and decide which sound good to you. There%26#39;s not much clothing shopping in Times square period. YOu will find some smaller stores on the upper westside (west 60s-90s), upper eastside (east 60s-90s) and even Murray Hill (east 30s-40s). There are lots of boutiques opening in Harlem too.
There are lots of sales going on right now. YOu should also have a look at sales and bargains on the NY Magazine site. Dailycandy.com is another place to check.

Thanks so much, these are great suggestions. I%26#39;ve started looking at these sites and printing out pages like mad. There%26#39;s no way I%26#39;ll get to more than a few of these great stores in an afternoon -- it looks like I may have to make a second trip to NYC soon!
