We are planning on flying to New York next year for 2 weeks and either renting a car or RV and travelling up to Buffalo/Niagra. We will obviously spend 3 or 4 days both ends but can anyone recommend a route. We will have 2 kids of 11 and 15 and don%26#39;t mind deviating for something worthwhile (we%26#39;re pretty much up for anything.) Have noted the Finger Lakes - will probably try the canoeing etc. Saw the Catskill Mountains on the map - is that a good area? Is it feasible to go to Montreal or will there be enough to do without? Thanks.
New York to Buffalo
Do you realize there are very inexpensive air fares from NYC to Buffalo? RV rental will be difficult in NYC. You should consider flying upstate and renting a car or RV there to tour around. There are lots of good areas to see. Where are you from? What time of year do you plan to do this trip?
Here%26#39;s just one of many website with info on upstate NY

There%26#39;s plenty to do without going to Montreal, but it would help to know what interests you besides canoeing. There%26#39;s lots of cultural and historical stuff, esp. during the summer.
New York to Buffalo
We are planning to go August 07 (like to get organized!) Yes, flying would be an option - I just thought that there would probably be so much to see and do between the two cities it would make a nice trip travelling up. However will go on the website you recommended thanks!
There is plenty to do and see between NY and Buffalo, but I think it would be cheaper in the long run and maybe a better use of your time to fly there and then do the touring around.
I live in Albany and I would recommend flying to Buffalo!
There are great things to see between NYC and Buffalo but with your limited time and the cheap airfare between the two cities. I would say fly and spend some time in the Niagara area (Canadian side). And kids love Niagara Falls area (particularly kids between the ages of 11 and 15).
I agree with the others, better to fly. Look at JetBlue for flights, they sometimes (always??) don%26#39;t show up under flight consolidated web sites like orbitz and travelocity
Also wanted you to realize this is the NY City forum and there is a wider forum under NY State with people that may have more knowledge about the upstate areas you%26#39;re interested in exploring. Just found this recent post on the Watkins Glen/Finger Lakes area. You might want to get some more info from those folks.
