I just got back from 4 days in Philadelphia and have to shout from the roof tops that the best art coleection in America is at the Barnes Foundation in Merion, PA - a 15 minute trian ride from Philadelphia.
The MOST FANTASATIC museum we have been to, anywhere in tne world, is the BARNES FOUNDATION. Please do yourself a favor and visit this temple of art. It%26#39;s a 15 minute train ride and a 20 minute minute walk to the greatest collection of French Modern, Impressionist and post-Impressionist artists in the world. More Renoirs, Cezannes and Matisses then anywhere I believe, with a few Van Goghs, Picassos and El Grecos thrown in for good measure. The Barnes is an American Treasure - you will see nothing like it in the world. How the art is ensembled is the one of the keys to the Barnes genius.

Thinking about a day trip to Philadelphia?
How long did it take you to get there? If I were going straight there from Penn Station, what would I do?
Thinking about a day trip to Philadelphia?
I went from 30th Street Station in Phila. I took the Septa Regional Rail R5 (Phila - Paoli - Malvern). Merion is the second stop (the first is Overbrook). Ticket is $3.00 one way off peak.
You can get to 30th Street Station either via Amtrak (which is the way I went) or via NJ Transit to Trenton then Septa from Trenton to 30th Street Station.
If cost isn%26#39;t the issue, take Amtrak - it%26#39;s a 1 1/2 hour ride.
Here is the Septa schedule . . .

After you get to the Merion station it%26#39;s a 8/10 of a mile walk to Barnes down a mansion lined street ;-)
Thanks LTT. ;)
