STAR or PLUS ATM's Locations & Safety

We will be in NYC for 6 days in July. Does anyone know if there are many ATM%26#39;s that accept the above? We will have one major credit card but would like to travel with minimal cash. I would prefer not to purchase Traveler%26#39;s Checks . If safe and accessable, we would like to withdraw the cash when needed. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

There%26#39;s probably one on every block. Chase is Plus, and Duane Reade drug stores (primary NYC chain) have Chase machines in every store. I%26#39;m sure all the major banks are Plus, but dont want to risk saying that.

Cash machines at major banks are completely safe to use. I dont use the random ones in small groceries. Of course - use your judgement. There are still a few machines right on the street - I wouldnt use those if you%26#39;re alone in a deserted area.

Use your judgement. If you see a cash machine vestibule with a crowd of young, scary guys with loose pants and bulging hips- avoid it. This has never happened in my lifetime but I%26#39;m trying to think of the things you%26#39;re fearing! In the winter you will see 1 probably harmless, homeless person sometimes.

You might want to check with your bank to see if they have a relationship with Chase, Citibank, Wachovia etc so you can use machines without the $1.50 fee.

ATMs are plentiful and safe. But, can%26#39;t guarantee air freshness, especially late on Saturday nights!

I was thinking what a coincidence it was that there were 2 posters from Petaluma - I%26#39;ve enjoyed lunch and shopping in your cute little town...wasn%26#39;t it the setting for American Graffiti?

We enjoyed the huge antique store that looks like it%26#39;s in an old bank building - it%26#39;s on the (I think) NE corner of almost the last intersection? And I always marvel about how past that point it just...ends. Also a couple of bakeries right on that main street, mmm.

Every ATM in NYC will take your card. In general, New York City is the safest large city in the US. In using ATMs, use the same safeguards that you would use in ATMs in California.
