tavern on the green
Many diners serve better food for a fraction of the price.
tavern on the green
we went there march 2005 snow and lights in the park with good food lovely and romantic
i am also fron the uk and found it like take it for what it is romantic bit fussy but part of the holiday
reminds me of a old restaurant in a hotel in olde england
try it wont harm you love the trip we are hopefully going back april 2007
It%26#39;s touristy. It%26#39;s over - priced for the level of food they serve. It%26#39;s not hard to book a table. It serves I guess what would be considered continental. Here%26#39;s a link to the menu section of their website

We generally steer people away from it, but I%26#39;ve also recently read someone say, you have to go at least once in your life. Given that I%26#39;ve gone more than once, I%26#39;d agree, if you want to go, do it but go forewarned. Lunch or brunch is cheaper than dinner and might be a better option. Or, for dinner, order simple things.
The Boat House is another restaurant in Central Park that%26#39;s not quite as expensive, not nearly as large and considered by most to have better food. But that too is nicest either for lunch or an early dinner when it%26#39;s still light. One thing to keep in mind, it doesn%26#39;t stay light here nearly as late as it does in England in the summer.
The River Cafe in Brooklyn is considered to be the best combination of food and view. It%26#39;s pricey but most feel it%26#39;s worth it.

I agree with whiz. Stop in for a drink, but dine elsewhere.
Tavern on the Green is lovely, the food is so-so and disappointing. The River Cafe combines the beautiful look and good food and at around the same pricepoint delivers much more in my opinion.
I took my elderly relatives there for lunch after my graduation recently. Please don%26#39;t anyone take this personally, i am talking for me and my family only, but TOTG is good for trashy people who think they are being swanky. The food is not good, it is ok, but it is expensive and not memorable. I read before i went (on TA reviews, not in the forum here) that it stinks of horses poop. well sure enough, when we got out of the cab the stink was there from the horse and carriages nearby. I didn%26#39;t smell it when we went inside though, it just struck me as funny because i thought the reviewer was just trying to be malicious when s/he wrote it. It was only tourists that were there. It is a good place for a wedding I would think, but really i wouldn%26#39;t recommend it to anyone without an ulterior motive (mine was that the food was plain and it wasn%26#39;t a high class place so i wouldn%26#39;t be embarrassed by the old folks%26#39; behavior). It was pretty, and they liked it, but i think the boathouse is probably a much better choice.
thanks for the tips, good to get honest opinions, theres nothing worse than spending a lot of money on average food! so i%26#39;m gonna take a look through previous posts on recommended eating establishments and get some ideas for our trip
Do try the Boathouse for lunch, but not for dinner. Though their food is pretty good (still not great), the big attraction is the lakeside setting. But the Lake isn%26#39;t lit at night, so all you can see is darkness.
Hi people --
I think the rule for most famous and expensive places everywhere in the world is go for a drink and appetizers, or for lunch. You both get the experience and stretch your travel dollars. It%26#39;s the rule I use for Michelin starred restaurants in Europe and works well. The food is always as good (or as bad) as dinner is, service is the same, and I%26#39;ve had the opportunity to see how the other half lives, so to speak, without their budget.
Having lived in NYC and eaten at TOTG more than once, I would say that it truly shines when the location of a private party, but the food is rather mundane otherwise. The service is usually excellent in my experience, and especially in NYC, that can cover a multitude of sins. This restaurant is what I call a real estate place. It depends on location, location, location.
We went there on our first trip to NYC. While I wanted to see it, I would NEVER go there again. The food was marginal at best and it was way overpriced.
