We are in New York for four nights from 21 January... Besides the tourist sites what do recommend seeing? Will it be snowing in January?
Are there any sports going on in during this time of January in New York? ie, football, baseball, hockey etc. My husband is playing gridiron here in Australia so if there is anything NFL related we could see that would be good.
NYC in January
Go to wunderground.com and scroll down to their trip planner. It will give you historic weather for Jan. It%26#39;s cold! Bring hats, gloves and scarves.
There is ice hockey (the Rangers) and basketball (the Knicks) at Madison Square garden in Manhattan at that time. There don%26#39;t seem to be schedules out for next season yet. The Super Bowl which marks the end of the football season is Feb 4 next year. The regular football season seems to end in Dec. so there could be some playoffs in Jan. when you%26#39;re here.
NYC in January
The AFC and NFC Championship Games are scheduled for Sunday 21st January but the chances of either the Jets or the Giants getting there and having home field advantage are about as good as England winning the World Cup! If you take a trip to ESPN Zone in Times Square, you could watch one of the games there however.
We went last january and unfortunately there was no snow. You could be luck though next year
Nic, seeing your smiling face just made my day! Hope you%26#39;re all well.
Teeka09, if you%26#39;re lucky enough to wake up to a snowy morning, make your way to any of Central Park%26#39;s hills, which immediately become winter playlands. You%26#39;ll find New Yorkers are very friendly when it comes to offering to share a sled for a zip down the hill.
When you are coming to NYC is probably one of the best times for snow but there will only be a one in four or five chance of you seeing it. Here is a link for the average weather in January.

We were in New York the beginning of Feb a couple of years ago...its was 12 degrees.....incredibly cold but we still had so much fun. What saved us were wearing little earmuffs that you could tuck in your purse and long silk underwear....You would be there close to Superbowl...so I suppose there could be a playoff game nearby...who knows...if nothing else every TV will have games on....I am sure something related to the NFL will be going on in Times Square.
We were there in january 2005 and there was a blizzard. Two years before that and no snow at all,but a heavy dump the day after we left.
As for the football as Nic says it is the time for the championship games so no one knows where they will be until the week before. As well you have to be pretty lucky to get a ticket to the post season games as they are very popular.
Thanks. Betty, what a lovely thing to say! Have a great Independence Day today (I include all US citizens in that remark).
It%26#39;s hard to remember the cold of our last trip to New York with the temperature over here being in the 30%26#39;s (C) for yet another day. One of the big benefits is that there are far fewer visitors at all the popular sites than in the summer months so time standing on line can be dramatically reduced. Dressing in layers is always recommended particularly when you remember that the temperature in the shops will mean stripping off or sweltering!
Layering the clothes is key - because even if there is no snow, it can be bitterly cold with winds whipping past you .... gloves, scarves, ear muffs, and hats are important as well as warm sox and waterproof boots if you need to stroll in slushy streets.
Popping into a nice toasty coffee shop for a hot cup and a nice pastry is such a lovely way to spend a bit of time. And then out to do some more strolling. Hope you have a great trip. Ta. MMM!
