My wife and I are visiting for the first time in October. We are staying 9 nights and after an extensive search on the net we are stillat a loose end as to where to stay. The prices in Mahattan are extreme but friends say being able to come and go from your room is great. Other friends say stay in Jersey City and commute every day.Much cheaper but the travel will be a pain. We have been recommended Candlewood Suites in Jersey City. Another friend said Greenwich village would be good.
We plan to do the usual things first timers do as well as relax a ';little'; bit. We have a long flight back to Perth Australia and I start back at work 12 hours after landing.
Recommendations on areas to look for accomodation would be greatly appreciated.
Which is better, Mahattan, Jersey City, Greenwich VillageOgaat,
I%26#39;m not sure from your post if you realzie that Greenwich Village is in Manhattan. It%26#39;s downtown below 14th st on the west side.
It is one of the most beautiful, charming areas of the city. It might not be the most convienent area to stay in, but definately can be done. If there is something nice there in your price range I would pick it over Jersey City.
I would not stay in Jersey City unless it was seriously the only thing available in your price range.
hotels are not my strong point here. if you tell the forum what you are looking to spend and the things you plan on doing you will get some good suggestions.
Which is better, Mahattan, Jersey City, Greenwich VillagePersonally I would prefer to stay in Manhattan to Jersey. Greenwich Village is a lovely area as is the Upper West Side. What is your hotel budget?
I%26#39;ve stayed at West Eleventh in the Village www.west-eleventh.com which is an apartment style place - really enjoyed it.
Also the hotel Newton www.thehotelnewton.com which is a budget hotel on the UWS
The Hotel Cosmopolitan www.cosmohotel.com another budget hotel but in Tribeca
All of the above places have their own private bathrooms.
If you post your budget others will be able to give more comprehensive advice.
Regards
Louise
For nine nights, if you want, you can do both. And I disagree that midtown Manhattan is more convenient to everything, it isn%26#39;t.
You could spend a few days part in Jersey City, saving some money, and a few nights in Manhattan.
Staying in Jersey City is especially convenient to lower Manhattan, because it is only only one subway/PATH train stop away. So if there are days you planned to visit WTC, South Street Seaport, Financial District/Wall Street, SOL, Ellis Island, Brooklyn Bridge, Chinatown, Century 21, etc... Jersey City is a great place to stay for those attractions.
For Broadway, ESB, TOTR, many museums and Times Square, midtown Manhattan is more convenient.
That%26#39;s why a split might work work for you depending on your itinerary. What airport(s) are you using? Jersey City would be closer to Newark.
And the Radio City Apts (hotel) have a full kitchen, and are not outrageously priced, so you could save quite a lot on food, eating in for breakfast and one other meal and dining out just once a day. Even packing a lunch you take with you to eat at a museum or in a park - with a full refrigerator you could easily do that.
Let the folks here know exactly what dates and price range you%26#39;re looking for and you%26#39;ll get plenty of suggestions.
Have a great trip and make sure you%26#39;ve got a way to sleep on your return flight! Ta. MMM!
Agree with everything that%26#39;s been said. There is no one ';best'; place in Manhattan but MOST anywhere in Manhattan reasonably close to a subway is more convenient than staying in Jersey City. If you can%26#39;t afford to stay in Manhattan for the whole trip, I agree with Voy,. split your time b/w Jersey City (or Queens) and Manhattan. The nicest hotel in Jersey City is the Hyatt Regency which is possible to ';win'; with a Priceline bid. (the other possibility with a 3* bid on PL is the Doubltree Suites, also ok).
What%26#39;s your budget? An apartment might also be an option.
The Jersey City location is fine. Not only can you walk to the Exchange Place PATH station to get to the WTC stop quickly, but you can take something called the Light Rail ($1.50) to the Newport/Pavonia stop where you can pick up the PATH that goes to 33rd Street. It stops at Christopher (West Village), 9th Street (West Village), 14th Street, 23rd Street (Chelsea) and 33rd (midtown)
Keep in mind that most Light Rail commuters are Jersey people who park and ride and dont know the area that well, and may not be able to give you accurate directions into Manhattan (I stayed in NJ for a week during my renovation and heard some dumb things!) - but at every PATH station there should be an attendant to guide you.
I was looking at trying to spend between $150 - $ 200 US. We arrive on the 11h of October and leave on the 20th. I don%26#39;t know anything about priceline and bidding. Can we do that this far out. Does it allow us to book 9 days. We as tourist have to book accommodation for the full length of our stay. Thanks to everyone who has replied.
Sorry forgot to mention we are flying in and out of JFK
In that price range don%26#39;t expect super luxurious. i am going for the first time in Sept.
Do you want your own bathroom?
www.expedia.com has some reasonably priced hotels. Be sure to read the reviews here and on expedia before you book.
We booked the Best Western Hospitality House. Very popular apt style housing for very reasonable price. They have very good size rooms as well.
Park Central seemed to be reasonably priced.
Radio city apts are popular too, but book early.
Have fun!
Hi OGAAT,
Husband and I are staying in Jersey City with one of his friends for our trip in July. As the price is free, we are more than willing to travel into NYC each day. After discussing the commute into the city, a little extra travel time (20 minutes) seems a small price to pay for saving US$2000 for a week.
I%26#39;d say look into hotels that are near the PATH transportation line, figure out how much time it would take you to get where you want from Jersey City into NYC and then see if the time it takes is worth the savings to you. Where we are staying, it certainly won%26#39;t be much of a hassle to get where we want in and around NYC.
Also, ask around on the Jersey City forum for hotel recommendations. I%26#39;ve read on the NYC forum many comments about how small and noisy peoples%26#39; rooms were. Perhaps Jersey City offers more spacious and comfortable rooms at the lower rates?
As this will be my first visit to the city you%26#39;ll have to take my suggestion with a grain of salt. But to me, it doesn%26#39;t seem like staying in Jersey will at all take away from the quality of my trip.
Good luck!
