tipping

what is appropriate to tip taxis? I read the cost of the taxi from the airport to manhatan runs about $30 including tip. Also, at the hotel, what is the going rate? Never been to NYC and want to make sure we do the right tips. thanks

tipping

From what airport? From Kennedy the fixed rate is $45.00, not including tip or toll. From LaGuardia, it is metered rate, about $30.00, give or take, it depends on the traffic %26amp; where in the city your final destination is, without tip.

Tipping of taxi%26#39;s - 15 - 20% of metered rate.

What do you mean at the hotel?

tipping

What hotel are you staying at? I%26#39;m not clear on what you mean about tipping at the hotel. Can you clarify your question? Ta. MMM!

Long Island Info

We%26#39;re going to be on Long Island for a week in July; what should we be sure to see, do? Any hotels %26lt; $200 that would be recommended (we%26#39;ll probably be in the Jones Beach area)? Thanks for the help!

Long Island Info

Just curious - why are you going to be in the Jones Beach are for a week? Touring with Kelly Clarkson?

tickco.com/venue_schedules/jones_beach.htm

Also, being that it%26#39;s June 28, you might be a little late to find lodging for an entire week near a beach town during the summer, which is when it is most popular.

Are you planning on renting a car? Public transit is available, but a little ungainly.

The more info we have on your situation, the better we can advise you.

Long Island Info

My husband has to be in that area of Long Island on business and we were planning on visiting Jones Beach (he is an %26#39;old%26#39; beach bum and insists on hitting every beach possible). I was looking for something else to do, especially during the weak. I think he has a room at the Residence Inn (?) in Plainville.

I%26#39;ll skip on Kelly Clarkson - I%26#39;m old enough that she%26#39;s not my style BUT I do know who she is.

Just the read the rest of your msg - we are from KS and we will have our car and spending a month in the NYC area (parking is going to be a bear,, right?)

Parking on Long Island will be not problem. Where will you be for the remainder of the month?

The client booked us at the Holiday Inn Martinique (where conference is being held) for most of the time. We%26#39;ll be in Bellmore (on LI), Elizabeth, NJ, Waldwick, NJ and back to NYC for a long weekend.

Want to see Jersey Boys but looks like the only way to get reasonable tickets are to get a hotel pkg. Saw one for the Beacon Hotel which looked different than the steady diet of Hiltons, Holiday Inns, etc.

I%26#39;m open to knowing what to see w/out the car in NYC (think we%26#39;ll park it since I%26#39;m sure driving is different than in Kansas City and it seems that you have to pay to park!

Annie,

I grew up on LI and if your husband is an old beach bum you%26#39;ll be hitting the right place.

Yes to Jones beach, You%26#39;ll be very close to it.

Also, drive a little further out to Robert Moses State Park. It is another public beach about 1/2 hour drive east. it is really beautiful. If you park in feild 5 you can walk east and see the Fire Island Light House.

You can also take a day and go over to Fire Island. There are many different communities, some more suitable for daytripping. You can take a ferry from Bayshore. Farther East there are ferries from Sayville and Patchoque. The ferry ride across the Great South Bay is about 20 minutes and is very relaxing.

On the eastern end of Long Island you have The Hamptons and montauk Point.

There are wineiries out east as well.

First dealing with the NYC portion of the trip, there%26#39;s nothing great about the HI Martinique but if it%26#39;s convenient for your husband, so be it. The Afffinia Manhattan is nearby and much nicer if you%26#39;re able to make a switch. It is near Macy%26#39;s if you want to do some shopping and a lot of the other stores are around there too. At Macy%26#39;s, if you stop at the customer service dept. they%26#39;ll give you a card to get an 11% discount on almost everything.

The Beacon is a good hotel on the upper westside, a nice residential area. If you can get the Jersey Boy tickets that way, do it. ;)

As to Long Island, the hotels in the suburban areas of Long Island are usually nothing great although some are newer than others. In terms of things to do/see, the gardens at Old Westbury are beautiful

http://www.oldwestburygardens.org/

and also near Teddy Roosevelt%26#39;s home, Sagamore Hill.

http://www.nps.gov/sahi/

Makes for a nice day in a nice area not too far from where you%26#39;ll be, but on the north shore closer to the bay than the ocean.

If you like shopping, there is a good mall not far from Jones Beach called Roosevelt Field. It has Bloomingdales, Macy%26#39;s etc. BUT, if you%26#39;re going to be in New Jersey, there%26#39;s no sales tax on clothing there so may be a better shopping place.

If your husband is a beach bum, it would be nice if he could get to see the Hamptons or Montauk, but the beaches further west are also very nice.

I should have also mentioned the Empire State building is not far from the Martinique. If you want to go up, buy tickets online in advance. The newer Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center is also great for views. While your husband is at the conference, you might want to take one of the bus tours. NY Party Shuttle or Marvelous Manhattan are both good and in enclosed buses with a/c.

There are also some good walking tours including some food tours

RE: Driving and Parking in the City

1) parking is expensive, figure $30-$40 a day. Check with your hotel to see if they have any parking deals with nearby lots

2) There is NO TURN ON RED anywhere withing the 5 borougs of NYC unless there is s sign saying it is allowed. (this is the opposite of the rest of the country). And if caught you most likely will get an expensive tickets. (some cops may take pity on you but don%26#39;t chance it.

Robert Moses is definitely nicer than Jones Beach if you want to drive just a little further... Keep in mind that between Field 5 and the first town in Fire Island (Kismet, where I%26#39;ve spent the last 20 summers) is a nude beach.

There are no public facilities in Fire Island, but the restaurants are good about letting people use their rest rooms. The restaurants are a 3 block walk from the beach.

The towns vary greatly but are all basically straight if you take a ferry from Bayshore. If you want to see the gorgeous almost Hampton-y lifestyle of the gay rich and famous, take the ferry from Saville to the Pines.

Giants Stadium/Meaowlands/JETS/Thanksgving

Hi all

Ok my question is, I have tix for the Jets Game on Thanksgiving Sunday this year, is it easy to get to, on public transport?, we will not have a car, and was kind of hoping there was a bus/coach/PATH. from Port Authority terminal, I assume there is plenty of public transport options for getting back to the city after the game aswell

Thanks for your help again

Chaz

Giants Stadium/Meaowlands/JETS/Thanksgving

They have numerous buses going over there and coming back from the city from the Port Authority. I went to a Jets game last year and it was pretty cheap (can%26#39;t remember the exact cost) The PA will be crowded as everyone will be coming back to the city after Thanksgiving.

Giants Stadium/Meaowlands/JETS/Thanksgving

There is indeed a bus that goes from Port Authority to the Meadowland Sports arena. Go to NJtrainsit.com for more info

Does anyone know if there truly is a place called pug hill in central park? If so, where is it located? Thanks.

    silly question

    I also found this...

    URBAN SPRAWL

    Central Park%26#39;s Best-Kept Secrets

An 843-acre park, yet New Yorkers still need to claim that ';hidden'; place inside it. While you can have a great day hitting beloved sites鈥擲trawberry Fields, the Alice in Wonderland statue鈥攖hose seeking overlooked spots best mark these on their map:

DOG DAY AFTERNOON Pug Hill, at 79th and Fifth (just past the Alice statue), fills up with those infinitely lovable squash-nosed dogs every Saturday and Sunday afternoon. And while pugs play, owners swap pug stories. PARK PERK Celebs Jenna Elfman and Paula Abdul have been spotted showing off their prized pugs.

Thank you so much! What a fun way to spend an hour on Saturday afternoon.

This is news to me! ;)

This is a new one for me too.

Hi - I%26#39;m a frequent visitor to Pug Hill. I have a 3 year old fawn Pug, and Pug Hill has been a great place to hang out. The location provided above is correct...it%26#39;s just northwest of the Alice in Wonderland Statue.

However, the area is currently fenced off. I believe this is due to resodding or protection of the trees. Thus, you cannot currently access Pug Hill. I don%26#39;t know when it will re-open, but let me know when you are visiting, and I%26#39;ll try to find out.

Just wanted to let you know. It is a blast...I%26#39;ve been there with up to 20 pugs playing with each other and their people.

Thanks for the information. My husband and I will be in New York mid September for a few days. I hope its open. I%26#39;d love to see all the pugs playing. I wish I could bring my own with me on our trip.

Golly - didn%26#39;t know about Pug Hill - have to check it out on my next weekend visit to the Met. Ta. MMM!

I%26#39;m guessing it will be open by September. The pugs usually gather on Sundays between noon-3pm, although it%26#39;s really hit or miss.

If you go to meetup.com, there is a New York Pug Meetup group, which often has events on the weekends. Even without your baby, you%26#39;d have fun checking out dozens of pugs playing together.

I am planning a trip to NY for Christmas . I am looking for a suite in a 4/5 star hotel that will accomodate 3 people . Any suggestions. Hoping to pay $600-$700 dollars per night

    3 guests???

3 people can be accomodated in a regular room with 2 beds (with 2 people sharing a bed) all the way up to a 3 bedroom suite where they%26#39;d each have their own bedroom. What did you have in mind?

At that price, you might look at the Four Seasons hotel. We%26#39;ve also had reports that the Regency Hotel has a nice suite with adjoining rooms--very nice hotel but not of the same caliber of some of the better 5 stars. Do you prefer a big hotel or small?

    Passport question.

Just a quick question.......has anything change in the last year with passport/visa requirements from the uk?

    Passport question.

Machine readable passport, visa waiver form, and a lot of airlines want info on where you%26#39;re staying before you board the plane ( you can often input this on the airlines website). Other than that, no change .

    Passport question.

you get the waiver visa at the airport yeah? i have a machine readable passport so i dont need to apply for a visa i will get it on the plane am i right or completly wrong??

Every airline I%26#39;ve flown with has given them out on the plane along with the customs forms. There are some that have them at check in, but don%26#39;t worry, you will be given one.

    thank you :o)

    hotel information

We are staying in new york october 12- 16. we are a group of 6 adults and are looking to book 2 suites. going on tripadvisor reviews we are thinking of booking the best western hospitality house, rated no. 11. has anyone heard negative feedback on this hotel?

also what would be the cheapest way for the 6 of us to get from jfk? 2 taxis?

    hotel information

Two taxis are not the cheapest way but I would recommend it considering the long flight and the luggage you will have. Each taxi will cost $45 fixed fare to anywhere in Manhattan, plus $4.50 toll plus tip.

    hotel information

BW Hospitality has some 2 bedroom suites but they don%26#39;t all have 2 bathrooms. I guess it depends on how you split the group-- 3/3 or 4/2. The Salisbury is another good budget hotel with suites. They have some 2 bedroom/2 bath suites that must be reserved by phone.

    nycsalisbury.com

The cheapest way for the 6 of you to get to Manhattan would be AirTRain/subway for $7/person, but it%26#39;s not very easy to navigate with luggage. Also depends on where you%26#39;re staying as to what transport is best. At the BW Hospitality, you could take the train option and connect to the E subway and get out at Lexington %26amp; 53 st. The hotel is close.

You might check the cost of a 6 passenger stretch limo from

    carmellimo.com

The only negative review of the BW Hospitality House is the very last one, posted by a French woman last month who found it difficult to sleep because of outside noise, largely due to (I think, I last had a French class 30+ years ago!) the fact that her suite was by the service entrance to another hotel %26amp; its garbage dumpsters. She also thought the houskeeping %26amp; condition of the furnishings left something to be desired. I don%26#39;t think this one review should prompt you to reconsider the wisdom of your choice :-)

    Check-in at Airports/ Heathrow Express

Hi. We are flying from Heathrow to JFK with Virgin in September. It is ages since we have done a longhaul flight so am intrigued to read that we can check-in online and also at Paddington Station where we are getting the Heathrow Express train to the airport. Has anyone checked in in this way ? Is it any more convenient or a better option to do it this way? We always thought that check-in was where you deposit your luggage and get your boarding pass. I assume if you do it online you get a pass to print off? And that you still have to queue at the airport to give in your luggage?? Please help!! Thanks.

    Check-in at Airports/ Heathrow Express

My daughter just checked in online with BA earlier this week, and it was a doodle. A boarding pass is printed off and then at the airport all they had to do was take their bags to a dedicated desk(no queues at all!) to have them tagged. There was a huge queue for people checking in the ';normal'; way. I assume Virgin will work the same way. It%26#39;s definitely a time saver.

    Check-in at Airports/ Heathrow Express

Thanks for that! You%26#39;ve just convinced me to try it!!

We use online check-in whenever possible. As has been said, it almost eliminates queueing at the airport; you just go the Fast Bag Drop desk to drop off your bags. Depending on the flight, you%26#39;ll either be able to print off your boarding pass at home, or you%26#39;ll be instructed to collect it at the Fast Bag Drop desk.

We used the check-in at Paddington Station once, and it was fantastic - you dropped your bags off there, then wandered down to the Heathrow Express with only your carry-on bags. Unfortunately, I don%26#39;t think Virgin have a check-in desk at Paddington any more.

Virgin online-check in is not as good as BA. You CANNOT print off your boarding pass and so you have to queue up and collect it at the airport when you drop of your luggage, so it doesn%26#39;t save much time. You can, however select your seats.

Paddington check-in closed a couple of years ago.

Thanks for the tips... Have got a few weeks to go yet so will have a think about it. The idea of leaving your bags at a london station and then expecting them to be at JFK airport fills me with ideas of lost luggage! if virgin dont use it anymore then that solves that problem!! thanks again!!

Check on the London Forum for Heathrow Express discounts. You can purchase round trip tickets for Heathrow Express and get about 6 GBP off the price ... if you enter the code.

Do a search on the London Forum for Heathrow Express discount .

I used this when traveling to London this spring - really easy. Enjoy. Ta. MMM!

The link to Heathrow express is:

    www.heathrowexpress.com/promo

And then enter the promo code 200007

    Ta. MMM!

    %26gt;%26gt;You CANNOT print off your boarding pass and so you have to queue up and collect it at the airport when you drop of your luggage, so it doesn%26#39;t save much time%26lt;%26lt;

In my experience of online check-in with various airlines, it%26#39;s irrelevant whether or not you can print out your boarding pass at home. You still have to show your passport and have your bags weighed and tagged and answer the usual questions about them; waiting for the check-in clerk to print out your boarding passes adds about five seconds to the process.

Whether or not you can print out your boarding pass at home, online check-in is still *way* faster than queueing up for normal check-in.

Thanks for the tip about the heathrow express discount!! I%26#39;m checking it out as I speak!! Thanks again.

The Heathrow discount is really a great deal, saves some cash and time - really easy to use. Hope you have a great trip. Ta. MMM!

Anco Studio Review - by someone who recently stayed there!

I was finally able to come to New York City for the

first time in 2003. I knew instantly that my fifty (

! ) years of anticipation had not been in vain and

that I would be back as often as I could fill up the

savings envelope marked NYC. Anco Studios on the Upper

East Side has made those subsequent trips possible.

We stayed in midtown that first visit, looking out

onto an air shaft for $250 a night, but shortly after

we returned to our home in Southern California, I saw

a tiny ad in the Los Angeles times. ';Best value in

Manhattan,'; it proclaimed, and it has certainly been

that. We stayed at Anco Studios in 2004 and 2005

for $99.00 a night, all taxes included, and we could

never get over our amazement that this reasonable

price made us neighbors with the Metropolitan Museum

of Art and gave us Central Park for a backyard. On

our visit this month the price had gone up to $155

(still including taxes), but so had the service. Our

room, #1A, was quite large, with both a queen and a

twin bed in addition to a full-size kitchen. We

already have reservations for us and four friends for

    a return visit in September.

This isn%26#39;t a hotel in the traditional sense of the

word, and there is no sign on the front. It%26#39;s a old

townhouse, most probably built in the late 1800s, that

has been divided into several small studios on four

floors. There%26#39;s no elevator, but each room has its

own bath and some form of a kitchen. Dishes and

utensils are provided. The accommodations are quite

varied with corresponding rates. We have been happy

    with the less expensive rooms.

We feel secure in this building. Members of the staff

have been trustworthy and helpful and the neighborhood

in general is very pleasant. Go out the locked double

doors and turn right and you are in the middle of

Museum Mile; go left and you are soon on Lexington

with its restaurants and little shops. The subway stop

is nearby, at 77th. and Lexington.

The building looks its age. For me that%26#39;s a big plus

and makes for an interesting stay, but if you like a

squeaky-clean modern style, Anco is not for you.

There is nothing ';fancy'; about these accommodations,

but if you are interested in friendly service and a

fantastic location you might want to give it a try.

It%26#39;s located at 59 E. 80th Street between Park and

Madison. This means that when you stand in front of it

and face west, the Met and Central Park fill your

view. What! You wanted to look out on Times Square??

So, there you are, folks, the decision is yours!

Anco Studio Review - by someone who recently stayed there!

Thank you for the report on Anco Studio. Sounds like just the kind of place for us. Hotel rooms that come from cookie cutters are a dime a dozen, as far as I%26#39;m concerned. Would you happen to have any photos to share? Where do you go for breakfast nearby? How do you get there from the airport? Thanks again for a great report.

Anco Studio Review - by someone who recently stayed there!

My sister, mom, and I recently stayed in the 80th St. E. Anco Studio, and it was not a good experience. The staff was friendly and helpful, but the accommodations were disappointing. The bathroom tile around the sink and in the shower was covered in mold. The room%26#39;s floor was dirty and paint was peeling off the walls. Our room was on the ground floor and our window looked out into an air shaft, so it felt like we were in a hole in the ground. I wish we had spent the extra $ and stuck with a chain hotel. Despite its convenient location, Anco will not be a part of my future travel plans.

    Thanks for that NYCgirl.

I was interested in Anco after seeing it mentioned on TA. I checked the website, was satisfied with what I saw and sent an email asking for details of rates. Got a reply to say ';between $145-$245 per night.'; inclusive of all taxes, charges and fees. Sent another email and was told that a studio apartment is $215.00 per night! Don%26#39;t know what happened to the $145.00 (thought studio was smallest you could get) and don%26#39;t know how the reviewer got $155.00 for, seemingly, more than one visitor.

I think I%26#39;ll send another email and try to clarify the situation.

    Thanks again

After reading the bad reviews of Anco Studios, I e-mailed them about their cancellation policy. Since my deposit is non-refundable, I told them to leave the reservation as is. In the meantime, BAG%26#39;s were checking on us for a possible tour and the AS%26#39;s (no pun intended) told BAG%26#39;s that we cancelled! So now we were turned down by BAG%26#39;s. So we are not having good luck at all and we still have more than three months before our trip.

So now I have this dilemma. Should we just stay there for all three nights, or stay the first night to use our deposit and then stay somewhere else for Friday and Saturday night. What a mess!! Please help!

No one can tell you what to do,all I know is that my friends who stay there have never had a problem, but it seems that you are having one, and if you are more comfortable, spend Friday %26amp; Saturday elsewhere. It may be a hassle but you have to do what you feel is right.

I would contact BAG and explain the situation, you still have plenty of time to apply for one, they require at least 2 weeks notice.

Just to reference what others always say, and to remind visitors going anywhere, check the cancellation policies prior to your bookings, because you never know.

Sorry about your trials %26amp; tribulations, but I am sure it will all work out in the end.

I%26#39;ll answer Helen first. My guess is they will either say the $145 is for the smallest room which is probably a studio for 1 (or that really claustrophic photo that worries me) OR they%26#39;ll say the $145 is for a different time of year.

Judy, I don%26#39;t know what to tell you. If you%26#39;re only here for 3 nights, it seems a shame to have to pack and unpack. At the same time it would also be a shame to have your stay ruined by a less than ideal room. I can only tell you I went into these rooms some years ago and while the location is fabulous, I was NOT happy with the look of the rooms, particularly the beds and bedding. But that was some 5 yrs ago I think.

Thank you both for your replys. I wrote back to BAG%26#39;s explaining the situation. Hopefully they will reconsider.

As for the hotel, since the last two nights are cancellable, I think I will wait until closer to travel time and go on travelzoo and see what is available. Maybe stay in a different part of town the next two nights. I dont know how I get myself into these messes, but I guess it%26#39;s better to think of it as an opportunity. Glass half full and all that. How soon should I start shopping travelzoo for a trip the middle of October? Thanks again, you guys are great. I realize that you can%26#39;t fix my problem, but it%26#39;s nice to vent and get ideas.

FYI - BAG does require a legit hotel reservation, which they obviously verify, to even put you in the system, so if you don%26#39;t have one for the entire stay, they will not honor your request.

I was thinking, if it would make you feel better, I can email my friend and ask her if it ok for you to get in contact with her directly, maybe she can clear up some of your concerns.

Wow, NYCGirl. That would be great of you! I just re-confirmed with Anco and we are definitely in for three nights unless we change the last two days later, which I am still debating about. I won%26#39;t switch hotels if it puts me out of the running for a BAG! Thanks so much!

I asked Anco to tell me more about the room and supposedly we are on the third floor in the back of the building, with one queen bed, a full kitchen and full bathroom. Sounds good, I%26#39;m hoping it%26#39;s better than the ground floor studio that someone wrote about and scared the heck out of me! After our stay I will definitely post a trip report and give a comment on a hopefully larger, cleaner room. Maybe I should take my own sheets? I did that when we went to Mexico, but we stayed in a very remote area. I shouldn%26#39;t think you would have to in NY.

    BAG Question

Single, male friend travelling to East Coast in October. A couple of days only in New York. I have suggested that he book a BAG.

My concern now is that he may be ';taking'; a greeter ';away'; from a larger group who really needs one, if you get my drift.

    I suppose the question is ';Is it selfish for a single person to book a greeter?';

What do the experts here think?

    BAG Question

I%26#39;m certainly no expert, but I don%26#39;t think it selfish in the slightest for a single traveller to request a Greeter. I hope he%26#39;s lucky enough to get one. Fingers crossed.

    BAG Question

I agree with Karen. Everyone is entitled to be shown round the city, it%26#39;s not his fault he%26#39;s on his own....single travellers already get penalised enough - I say go for it!

It ranges from 1 - 6 people, so it is no problem, and is it selfish, absolutely not.

I%26#39;m a Greeter, and I frequently show single visitors around. Please tell your friend he%26#39;s absolutely not ';taking a greeter away'; from anyone.

I%26#39;d think a single person would be especially deserving of a BAG.

Anyone who applies is deserving of a BAG, there is no formula for who gets one or not, no one is more deserving than another.

im going to ny solo- and have applied for BAG and no i didn%26#39;t think i was being selfish!! i thought im entitled to a BAG greeter as much as other groups. :o)

    Thanks for the reassurance everyone.

He will apply as soon as he has sorted out his accommodation.

Needless to say that I am green with envy and have asked to see the size of the bag he is taking. After all I have been going to the gym every morning and just might fit into a largish suitcase!!!! :)

    Waverunner rental

Hi- We are looking for places in Lake George that will have Waverunner rentals. We will be there the last week of June (before the maddening crowds!).

    Any suggestions?

    thanks!

    Waverunner rental

there is a place right in the village.. i believe it%26#39;s called mike%26#39;s water sports.. if you are in the village mall and walk down the stairs to the lake it%26#39;s right out front they have a booth type thing... its pretty expensive though i think it was like $75 for a half an hour.

    Waverunner rental

I%26#39;m going up to Lake George the last week of August and was looking to rent a waverunner as well. Did you go to the place that was suggested in the village? If so, was it really $75 per 1/2 hour? If not, do you have any other suggestions? I%26#39;m meeting my family who I don%26#39;t see often (I live in Ohio) and was trying to come up with some ideas for the family (I have 6 nephews 11-20). Any thoughts?

    Thanks,

    Brian

Turns out, you can%26#39;t rent a waverunner in Lake George village. As of this year, they are not allowed. However, go a bit north (3-7 miles) to Diamond Point and Bolton Landing and there are several places you can rent them. Rates ranged from $35-75 per half hour.

Arrive in NYC on 7/8 in mid afternoon. Thinking about going to the Perfect Crime. Is it worth the $40.00 ticket?

    Transpotation from JFK

What is the quickest safest and most economical way to get from JFK to the Sheraton Towers. I have priced super shuttle, airlink, and Carmel Limo. The shuttle is the cheapest, but also the slowest.....there will be two of us....any tips?

    Transpotation from JFK

I think you%26#39;ve answered your own question.

When it comes to travel, pick 2 of the 3 cause you ain%26#39;t going to get quickest and safest and cheapest ALL AT THE SAME TIME.

  • tipping

Thanks for letting me know tipping for taxis. What I meant about the hotel is anyone handling bags, tip per bag.

    tipping

On the website I gave you it says

    Hotels

Bellman - $1-$2 per bag; $5-10 for running errands

Concierge - $10 for a special effort such as handling airline tickets; offer the tip after each service or at the end of your stay

Chambermaid - generally no tip for one-night stays; $2-$5 per night for longer stays

Doorman - $1-$2 for hailing a cab; $2-$5 for unloading baggage

    Room-service waiter - 15-20% of bill

    Valet park attendant - $1-$2

    tipping

Whiz---with all due respect, we always tip the maid when we have one night stays. The way I look at it, the maid still has to clean the room regardless of whether you stay one night or one week.

For chambermaids I usually leave a dollar or two, perhaps even 3 if I%26#39;m feeling capricious, each day when I leave the room. You never know if it will be the same maid when you check out. Plus I find that the favor is often returned in some form, extra towels, not writing down my mini-bar..etc. Not expected but always pleasant when it happens.

I leave $5 for thel maid (every morning since as cbcito said you can%26#39;t be certain that it%26#39;s the same person who%26#39;s servicing your room throughout your stay) if I%26#39;m staying in a regular room; $10/day if in a suite. %26#39;Cause as I see it, it takes more time %26amp; energy for her to do her job (make the beds, vacuum and clean the bathroom) than it does the bellhop to bring up my suitcase or the doorman to flag a cab.

  • eating ideas

We are staying at the Doubletree Metropolitan on Lexington Ave. There will be 3 women and none of us have ever been to NYC. Help! We know the basic tourist stuff, mostly interested in reasonably priced restaurants around the area. Appreciate any suggestions.

    eating ideas

For breakfast--and not far from your hotel--go to Ess-a-Bagel. Their bagels are delicious and they have a huge selection of toppings available (51st and 3rd Ave.).

    eating ideas

You would have to define reasonably price, because it varies according to people. If you are from a small town, you will find that the prices are not the same in a big city like New York.

There%26#39;s a French restaurant called Cosette (163 east 33rd street). It is between Lexington and Third avenue. It is supposed to be quite good and not too expensive. You can always check out the restaurants menus beforehand at menupages.com. It always helps a lot.

A really good Italian place is Campanile (30 east 29th street). The food is superb and the owner makes you feel welcome.

You could take the bus to go back to the hotel or take a nice long walk.

Be sure to buy a really good map of New York and study it before leaving home! The National Geographic one is really complete.

Your hotel is in a business district, which means most of the restaurants cater to business people on expense accounts, so are more expensive. You%26#39;ll find more ';neighborhoody'; restaurants a few blocks east, in the Sutton Place / Turtle Bay area. There are also inexpensive places in the food court at Grand Central, just a few blocks away.

It%26#39;s not very inexpensive, but I like the nearby Brasserie, on 53rd St. between Park and Lexington (in the Seagram Building).

But you%26#39;ll find it%26#39;s very easy to get around, so you can dine any place in the city and get home easily. For lots of ideas, read through the ';sticky'; threads at the top of the NYC forum. There%26#39;s a restaurant hot list, and a collection of trip reports.

    Have fun exploring.

Sorry to differ with Bettina, but there are some very reasonably priced options in the area. La Mangoire and La Mediterranee are both very good French restaurants nearby with great prix fixe dinners. Reviews and more info on both here

    menupages.com/restaurantdetails.asp鈥?/a>

While I hate chains, people have reported here good food (esp. burgers and ribs) at decent prices at the Houston%26#39;s in the Citicorp building.

    menupages.com/restaurantdetails.asp鈥?/a>

    There%26#39;s an Angelo%26#39;s pizza on 55 st %26amp; 2nd ave. that%26#39;s excellent.

Azure on 3rd %26amp; 51 st. gets great reviews on menupages for croissants, sushi, sandwiches etc.

    menupages.com/restaurantdetails.asp鈥?/a>

For a nice outdoor meal, Metropolitan Cafe on 1st ave %26amp; 53 st. has a nice garden. Plain food, not special but a good local place.

And if you like Mexican, Rosa Mexicano isn%26#39;t far on 58th st. Don%26#39;t forget Serendipity (near Bloomingdales) for a dessert.

I can enthusiastically endorse several of nywhiz%26#39;s suggestions. We went to La Mangeoire for the first time in April because of her recommendations of it here on the forum %26amp; had a wonderful (and reasonably priced) evening!

Houston%26#39;s burgers are much superior to those at PJ Clarke%26#39;s; Rosa Mexicano is fun; and Azure%26#39;s virtual smorgasbord of breakfast, lunch %26amp; light supper fare -- with many healthy choices -- is a boon to the neighborhood. There is a small, mezzanine dining area at Azure, but most people carry their selections away... and no one at the Doubletree will raise an eyebrow if you bring yours back to the hotel :-)

    question

i was talking with my boss who was in ny last october and she was trying to remember the name of the hotel that has a revolving view of ny?? any ideas cos she recommended this place and also a lovely italian place that has pictures of the pope inside- apparently it one of the best italian places in NY any help?? this italian is nr the waldorf-they found the place by accident and she cant remember the name of it- she told me to try and eat here?

    question

I think the hotel is the Marroit Marquis in Times Square, next to the MTV building has a revolving resturant.I would like to check it out myself.I think you can just have a drink in there without buying a meal.

    question

Yep, it%26#39;s The View atop the Marriott Marquis in Times Square which is the revolving restaurant. You wouldn%26#39;t want to eat a meal there because you can get better food for less money elsewhere, but they do offer a $15 dessert buffet which has been getting compliments here on TA:

    tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g60763-i5-k655769-鈥?/a>

I%26#39;m stumped as what the Italian restaurant might be; Balmonte%26#39;s has some pictures of Popes on its walls, but it%26#39;s in Brooklyn.

I agree, just the drink at the Marriot Marquis - or the dessert - sounds neat. You can get much better food and much better prices at many other places. Check out the restaurant sticky on the first page. Don%26#39;t have a clue about the Italian though. Ta. MMM!

The View in the Marriott Marquis is the ONLY revolving restaurant in the city.

As to the Italian, there are probably 30 or more Italian restaurants near the Waldorf. Having photos of the Pope doesn%26#39;t really tell us anything. It would help to know what it looked like inside or which direction from the Waldorf. Fresco is a popular place near there owned by a media savvy family. Felidia is another.

Looking on a map, the San Martin restaurant appears to be the closest Italian to the Waldorf and I don%26#39;t know it.

thank you- i will try and pay a visit to the $15 dessert buffet yum.. and get a drink- how much on average is a pint of beer or bottled alcohol??

My boss said the italian place was run by an elderly man (not that it makes much help lol) thank u all for your help anyways. Also regarding the marriott- do u have to dress to impress just to go to the view restaurant or are you able to go there in just normal casual clothes?

The indicated dress code is ';business casual'; which typically means no jeans, tank tops, flip-flop sandals. and the like. Slacks and a shirt/blouse/polo shirt will be fine.

slacks?? i take thats full length trousers? business casual- erm i aint a business woman-so dont have business type clothes to my name lol- which means the perfect excuse for shopping :o)

';slacks'; is a uni-gender word here :-) given the exchange rate, you might wish to wait %26#39;til you get here to purchase those trousers -- and if you%26#39;re coming in the near ftuture, you can take advantage of summer clearance sales!

im arriving august 29th.. when does the sales start? knowing my luck i will miss them all together.. im loving the exchange rate at the mo.. :o)

For business casual, a pair of khakis and a nice top will do. Also, no sneakers---wear a good pair of walking shoes instead. As for department store sales--they go on all the time.

    sol question

I%26#39;m feeling the pressure now as my 3 sons and I will be there at the end of the month...ok, is Mon. a good day to visit Sol and Ellis island or is that the busiest day? also. we are staying at Radio City Suites, do I tell the cabbie 49th @ 6th? or 49th @ 7th?...will he drop us off at the corner or in front of the hotel? I guess I want to know which corner is closest? thanks, sounds incidental I know.

    sol question

I have no idea about whether Mon. is a good day for SOL. It certainly is better than a weekend. The trick seems to be to get there very early, like 8 am. Have you bought tickets online? Do you want to have a tour? If so, you need to reserve in advance.

Your hotel is almost dead in the middle of the block on 49th b/w 6th %26amp; 7th-marginally closer to 6th I think. If you want to be dropped right in front of the hotel (ie with luggage) you say 49th between 6th %26amp; 7th and when you%26#39;re near, say it%26#39;s #142 west at the Radio City apartments. 49th st. runs west, so if you%26#39;re coming from JFK or LGA, the cab will be going in that direction anyway. If you%26#39;re coming from Newark, he%26#39;ll have to go around the block to drop you in front.

When you%26#39;re out and about w/o luggage, if you%26#39;re heading back to the hotel going uptown, you could get dropped off at 6th ave. (which goes uptown) %26amp; 49th and walk in a half block. If you%26#39;re heading downtown to get back, get out at 7th ave.

    sol question

Thanks, we are coming from LGA and will only have carryon luggage. We always travel light..I was just on the circline site and plan on purchasing tix ahead of time for the 1st ferry out...is the audio tour worth it? and should we try and get monument passes? My options for sol.ellis island are for Mon or Tue. plus chinatown, nyu, the village and everything else lower manhattan has to offer...we will have done the party shuttle tour so will have seen some sites already...am thinking Mon. may be busier for tourists visiting sol since it is the start of the week. would like to combine Tenement museum , closed on Mon. but think I should come back down another day, as maybe too much for the kids for one day...

It%26#39;s been so long since I was at SOL, can%26#39;t advise from personal experience. Reviews on whether it%26#39;s worth getting a tour are decidedly mixed. Here%26#39;s a positive one from scubadiver5 just a few weeks ago: (June 13)

';TIP- to miss the queues, book tickets online and be at Castle Clinton around 7.45. A couple of people came out 15 minutes before the ticket windows opened with boxes containing all the pre-booked tickets- just loiter around the gates instead of joining a queue.) This meant there were only a handful of people in front for security screening and we were amongst the first onto the first boat. We had prebooked a monument access pass ( how tight is that security?!) and would recommend this.

    Ellis Island was slightly spoiled by the large number of school groups, but very enjoyable nonetheless. Would recommend the audio tour.';

Here%26#39;s a negative one from back in April with lots of comments from others.

    tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g60763-i5-k548365-鈥?/a>

thanks Whiz, I willplan on being there early...don%26#39;t they send you the tix in the mail? then we just have to hang out for the security line, Correct?

ok, after reading their website, I guess you do have to pick up the tix...now I don%26#39;t know if I should prebuy or wait to purchase the 1st boat out...I%26#39;ve read mixed reports

I would definitely pre book with the monument access pass. We went on a Tuesday morning and I used all the advice from this forum, which helped immensely.

Take the subway and plan to be there for about 7.45am. It is signposted from the subway to Castle Clinton. Once you arrive at Castle Clinton, go to the right of the ticket booths and you will see a table where the people give you the pre-booked tickets. You then head to the security line.

Once you board the boat you can move around and go upstairs for a good view, but as the boat approaches the island, most people are taking photos, take this opportunity to take a quick snap then head to the exit of the boat, so you can get in line quicker for the monument pass. It is signposted to the security line and you then have security again.

You can then spend time exploring the island once you come back down.

We were one of the first people on the pedestal that day, but the crowds started to arrive very quickly and when we exited the queues where very long.

Basically, pre-book, get there early for the first boat, and stay near the exit to the boat so you are one of the first off the boat and fist up the monument.

thanks so much lamedoc, I will do exactly as you suggested...I think I will plan on Tue. also.........

    help needed re thanksgiving

im coming to new york with my husband for a shopping trip on nov 20th to nov 25th. we are travelling from n.ireland. we have only just realised it is over thanksgiving. can anyone advise us on what to do on thanksgiving day and is anywhere open. Are there places to eat open. Sorry but we dont have thanksgiving here so we are very unsure of what we can do that day. All advice welcome

    help needed re thanksgiving

Lots of restaurants are open. Traditional turkey dinner is the custom. The parade is a big deal. Some of the biggest sales of the year that weekend. If you must shop on the day, I think Woodbury Commons, the outlet mall north of the city MIGHT be open. Otherwise, wait til Fri., THE biggest shopping day of the year.

    help needed re thanksgiving

The city will be jam-packed full of the big Thanksgiving Day participants.

If you want to see the Radio City Spectacular or any other shows book them now, things for that weekend will sell out fast.

Keep an eye on opentable.com. Sometime around October it will have a list of restaurants open on Thanksgiiving with their special menues. Reservations can even be made online through opentable (at no cost).

what is the radio city spectacular and hows the best way for booking

It is a Christmas show featuring singing, and dancing by the legendary Rockettes chorus line. It also features Santa and a living nativity scene. It usually has an ice skating routine as well. It%26#39;s family entertainment.

To order tickets, go to this site:

    http://www.radiocity.com/eventcalendar/home#

Click ';Box Office'; Then click ';Christmas Spectacular'; You will get the ticketmaster page and a calendar with dates and show times (there are several shows in a day). In the box that says ';code'; put in the word BSANTA. This is a discount code.

In Spetember there are often buy one ticket get one free specials on the web, but Thanksgiving (and Christmas) are usally blackout times for those specials because there is no trouble filling the house then.

thanks i will look into christmas spectacular. Gotta cram my shopping into tues and wed now.

IMHO I would skip Radio City. I for one don%26#39;t like it. I would recommend a Broadway Show instead.

are they on on thanksgiving day and wheres the best place to book online

Yes the Xmas Spectacular runs on Thanksgiving Day. The best place to book is on the official website

    radiocity.com/radiocity/鈥ccs2006.html

There are 3 showtimes listed for T%26#39;day. There are discounts available starting around Sept. on broadwaybox.com but I don%26#39;t know whether they ever do discounts on T%26#39;day. I thought there%26#39;d be a 10 am show that would be discounted but I don%26#39;t see a show at that time listed.

do braodways shows run on thanksgiving day?

So far as I know Broadway theatres are shuttered on Thanksgiving, but usually shows will have an extra, matinee performance the next day.

  • New York Party Shuttle

Has anyone used this company, if so, what was the tour like?

    New York Party Shuttle

We took the tour last November and thoroughly enjoyed it. The guide was very knowledgeable and humorous and it gave us a good overview of Manhattan on our first day in New York. Then we returned to the areas we were most interested in on our own. We picked this tour because you get off the bus at a number of the stops so you can really enjoy the attraction.

    New York Party Shuttle

Ditto. We took the tour last week and had a great time. We chose it mainly for the convenience of a one day tour with a small group. You do get off an on a bunch of times, but you%26#39;re always with the same people, driver and guide. Like sktraveller, we later went back to some of the places we wanted to spend more time at. I definitely recommend this tour if you%26#39;re looking for a fun way to explore the city in one day and meet new people.

Thanks Did you take the morning or afternoon tour where did you get off and on.Where were you staying in n.y. was the hotel and area good.ANY GOOD IDEAS.

Visited NY recently. We took the adviser of the replies here and really enjoyed the tour. I would recommend it to anyone on their first or second day of their stay as it really gives you an idea of where things are to go back for a longer look.

The guide gave us some interesting information we wouldn%26#39;t have otherwise known. The walking wasn%26#39;t too much at all. We got to see quite a lot of the sights on that one trip well worth the money.

sorry - another question about accommodation ...

we%26#39;re planning to visit NYC in october to celebrate our anniversary. the search for the perfect accommodation for us is driving me crazy.

we%26#39;re looking for a room or small apartment on a high floor with great views of the manhattan skyline. ideally somewhere near central park. our budget is about $225 a night. we will revise the the budget if it is unrealistic.

does anyone have a list of high rise hotels in the area? we would also love to hear from anyone who has stayed in a high rise studio/1 bedroom aparment near central park ...

sorry - another question about accommodation ...

    Well...........

You won%26#39;t find luxury accomodations at that rate here. Most of the luxury hotels near the park are quite expensive. For example the Essex house starts at $450, the Trump at $500 and the Manserin Orental at about $550. And prices go up for rooms on higher floors.(prices approxomate, I just checked some random dates in oct for you)

Part of the problem is October is usually the most popular month for tourists to NYC (I don%26#39;t know why - perhaps it is the cool weather and the new Broadway Season).

Central park is nice, try to stay south of 96th street.

sorry - another question about accommodation ...

Not exactly what you%26#39;re looking for, but I think it%26#39;s close to your price range....The past couple years, we%26#39;ve stayed at the Beacon on Broadway btwn 74 %26amp; 75th.. It%26#39;s about three blocks to Central Park, and it%26#39;s a great area with lots of restaurants and shops, safe and close to the subway. It%26#39;s only 25 floors, but the views from the 24th floor are awesome, we could see all the way across the Hudson into New Jersey, and the 12th floor views were great as well - we had an awesome view of the Ansonia. It%26#39;s right across the street from the Fairway market, and has full kitchenettes - fridge, oven, toaster, microwave, sink, dishes, etc.

A friend stayed in an apartment on a high floor. The rate was $225/night but it may have gone up and there%26#39;s a cleaning fee.

    http://www.greatrentals.com/NY/13369.html

I think he said he found it on vrbo.com (vacation rental by owner)

It%26#39;s about 10 blocks from the park. Someone else on this forum is staying at this apt. which appears to be a high floor in a great location also about 7 blocks from the park.

    cyberrentals.com/USA/鈥137574.htm

Neither of these will necessarily have views of the park, but they%26#39;re near the park. You won%26#39;t likely find a park view for $225. In fact, aside from perhaps an apartment, I think that budget may be unrealistic for October for something nice. That said, it%26#39;s always possible to find a deal on travelzoo.com but you won%26#39;t find one now for Oct.

The only hotels near Central Park that are highrise and might be somewhat affordable are the Parker Meridien or possibly the Essex House (mixed reviews here). The Helmsley Park Lane might also. There are a few highrise apartment buildings on west 58th that I%26#39;ve seen on some of the apt. rental websites (like cyberrentals or maybe nyhabitat.com)

    Good luck and happy anniversary.

Yes, I%26#39;m the one staying at the vrbo apartment (#49782) but I didn%26#39;t mention it because the OP mentioned Central Park twice - it%26#39;s not right there, nor does it have a view of the park (it does face north and east, but I think other, higher buildings are in the way). But it certainly fits his budget (and the price is still $225 plus cleaning fee) so it%26#39;s worth a look.

thanks everyone for responding ... there are plenty of suggestions here for me to follow up on. from what you guys are saying here, it would appear that the apartment option might be best for us.

nywhiz ... both the greatrentals and cyberrentals properties you mentioned are exactly the type of accommodation we%26#39;re looking for. unfortunately a 7-night minimum stay applies to both and we%26#39;re only staying 4-5 nights :^( i guess i can always ask the owners if they%26#39;ll accept a shorter stay.

we also need some help gauging the distance to the park and how far a ';block'; is -- eg if the location is 7 blocks from central park, how long on average does it take to walk there? one of the reasons we would like to stay near the park is because my husband is a keen runner and would like to keep up his running while we%26#39;re in NYC ... it may sound silly to some but running around central park is one his must do%26#39;s ...

i will also check out the beacon on broadway ... nywhiz -- in a previous post you mentioned that property no 11 on www.apartments2book.com is the beacon -- is this the same place?

Yes, as best as I can tell, #11 on apartments2book is the Beacon. But doublecheck the number of floors of the Beacon. I don%26#39;t think of it as a high building. There are several hotels in that area (upper westside) but don%26#39;t know that any will fall into your budget in October. The Excelsior, the Lucern, On the Avenue (listed as On the Ave here) are all in that area and SOME of the rooms on a high floor would have views.

As to distance to Central Park and how far is a block. Mapquest.com would be a big help. If you put the name of the hotel is the top line and New York, NY and then get a map of say the Beacon Hotel, you%26#39;ll see how far it is from the park. The park is huge and the Beacon would be about 5 mins from the west side of the park while the 2 apts. I told you about would be 10-15 minutes walk away. In broad strokes, anything in the east or west 50s-80s would be an easy walk. The uptown/downtown blocks take about a minute to walk. I think 30 are a mile. The crosstown blocks (from one avenue to the next--ie Fifth ave. to Madison Ave.) are longer and not as evenly spaced.

thanks nywhiz ... you%26#39;ve been a great help!

I think the standard rule on uptown/downtown blocks is that 20 equal a mile, and that%26#39;s how I count it when I%26#39;m walking miles. Crosstown blocks can be as much as twice as long as an uptown/downtown block, but there is a lot of variance, and some are shorter than that.

I haven%26#39;t been in the rooms at the Parker Meridien, but that%26#39;s a pretty tall building. Even if the rooms on the north side don%26#39;t have a park view (or you can%26#39;t get one of those), the ones on the south side could have good midtown views of skryscrapers. Maybe someone who has been there recently could advise. Alternatively, you could contact the hotel and ask. This hotel would also have ready access to Central Park.

Another hotel that would practically guarantee good city views, but that isn%26#39;t near Central Park, is the Millenium UN Plaza. Rooms there start at about the 30th floor, so they all have views of something. This might also be in or close to your budget, as long as your stay doesn%26#39;t coincide with UN meetings in late September/early October. Many people in this neighborhood run -- on the sidewalks, along the East River promenade, etc., but not in Central Park.

The Hilton TImes Square is another high-rise hotel where rooms start on a high floor (I think around the 20th floor) and will offer good

skyscraper views, although this area is more congested, and possibly not as easy for your husband to run in, although people do it.

Wherever you book, may it clear when you check in, if not before, that you would like a room with good skyline views.

And that%26#39;s exactly why I booked that apartment - I wanted to be absolutely, positively guaranteed the view. I didn%26#39;t want a hotel to say ';so sorry, we know you reconfirmed this 18 times but we simply do not have any view rooms left';.

Of course, if it%26#39;s foggy and rainy every day I%26#39;m there that%26#39;s another story :)

Another possibility would be to stay downtown in the financial district, where yould might have close-up views of the downtown skyline and more distant views of the midtown skyline. Your husband could run in Battery Park and along the promenade that runs all the way from Battery Park City up the Hudson River.

  • Online seating options

Can you help me with a university project...

Does anybody know of any airlines/ train services (worldwide) that offer you the ability to choose your seat online during the booking process? BA, Air France all appear to save this feature until checking online.

    Online seating options

I fly with a number of airlines when on business, SK, BA, Lufthansa, Iberia and so on and they don%26#39;t (as far as i am aware) allow you to pick your seat until check in, however i am a member of the BA executive club and as part of that you can select a preference (ie aisle seat) so whenever i check in i usually get what i want.

    Online seating options

';BA, Air France all appear to save this feature until checking online.'; Not sure I follow you on that. I think most transcontinental flights allow choosing seats at time of booking. You may have to fill in info for credit card etc. and buy the seats before you see that though.

Continental airlines alIows you to look at seat availability before deciding which flight to chose.

When you book online with United you can choose your seats at that time.

Many of the airlines, American for example, will assign you seats when you book on-line but then you can change them to what you want.

Not sure if this will help your project but seat guru is a website that show airplane seating for most major airlines and different planes.

    www.seatguru.com/

I%26#39;ve pre-booked my seats online with United, Continental, Virgin and American Airlines.

With trains in the UK you can%26#39;t choose your seat but you can choose whether you want to sit foward or backward facing.

It%26#39;s my understanding that US airlines for domestic flights will allow you to choose your seats at the time of purchase (or assign them maybe for some airlines) up to so many seats. Once a certain number of seats have been claimed, everyone else has to wait until check-in to choose which seat they%26#39;ll sit in. So, sometimes you can choose your seat at purchase and sometimes you can%26#39;t, but I%26#39;m not sure that has as much to do with which airline you fly as with when you buy.

I%26#39;ve chosen the seats at booking with both BA and United.

Dangriffin, what exactly is the focus of your university project? Surely it%26#39;s not just whether some airlines, etc. allow you to check in on-line - some do, some don%26#39;t. Is there are a larger topic?

    Best Transportation from Airport

Six of us will be flying into LGA (arriving around 1:00 p.m.) What is the best transportation for us to get to the Waldorf Astoria? Also, our return flight is out of Newark (approximatelly 5:30 p.m.) . Any assistance would be appreciated.

    Best Transportation from Airport

Two taxis. Each cab will cost around $30 with tip and toll. Limit is 4 passengers for a regular cab; 5 passengers for a minivan cab. A car service could be used for the trip to EWR. Two cars would be needed. A car service charges around $45. With tip and toll cost would be at least $60 a car. A less expensive option is a taxi to Penn Station and the Airtrain to EWR. Taxi fare would be around $10 to Penn Station and the Airtrain is about $13 a person.

    Best Transportation from Airport

I%26#39;d contact some of the car services and get a quote for 1 vehicle (whether minivan or stretch limo) for all 6 of you to/from both airports. Compare the prices to taking 2 cabs. The cab from LGA will cost ~$30. Most people use a car service to EWR with a flat fare. Tolls to EWR can add $10 to the trip. The first co. listed below has saving coupons on their website.

    Salisbury Hotel Transfers

We are staying at the Salisbury from 21-25 January and arriving at JFK airport. Our travel agent has organised transfers from the airport for us for $50 Aussie each way however we don%26#39;t know if it might be cheaper and easier to catch a train? We will both have one suitcase each, do you think this will be a hassle in the cold?

How do we get from JFK to the Salisbury?

    Salisbury Hotel Transfers

    ';Our travel agent has organised transfers from the airport for us for $50 Aussie each way ';

What sort of transfers? I don%26#39;t know what the exchange rate is or if that%26#39;s for both of you or per person. The agents usually use a shared mini bus that stops at each person%26#39;s hotel and can take forever and is not very comfortable.

A taxi (for up to 4 people) will be $55 US ($45 fare plus tip). That%26#39;s the easiest thing to do. YOu could take a train but it will require some changing. You could also take a Express Airport bus to Port Authority bus terminal for $15/person and then a taxi from there (~$5). Here are all the options

    http://www.panynj.gov/aviation/jgtsfram.htm

    Salisbury Hotel Transfers

Sorry its a shuttle and $52 Aus for the both of us each way so about $38 US for the both of us each way. We are getting in about lunch time so don%26#39;t really want to waste time stopping at each person%26#39;s hotel.

Where is the Port Authority stop? Is it fairly close to Midtown seeing that it%26#39;s only a $5 cab ride? Is there also a train to Port Authority? One of these sounds like the best way!

Port Authority is at 42 st %26amp; 8th ave. Your hotel is at 57 st %26amp; 6th ave. There is a train but the best way to do that will take you to Penn Station which is 34 st %26amp; 7th ave. YOu%26#39;d have to take a taxi or other transport from there. I honestly would take a taxi for convenience. You can deal with using train or bus when you%26#39;re ready to leave and have had some experience getting around. I can%26#39;t imagine having made the trip from Oz and trying to deal with trains and buses. The taxi is not that much more. You can also order a car service that%26#39;s about the same price as the taxi.

    carmellimo.com

This co. has a coupon on their website for a discount (but you have to tell them in advance you%26#39;re using it and get a code #). You will also see some mention of tolls. Given the location of your hotel, you should have the driver take the 59th st bridge with no toll.

FTI- midtown is generally considered anything between 34 st %26amp; 59 st.

If your bags arent really large and heavy, you can take Airtrain to Jamaica station, pick up the E (subway) train to Manhattan and get off at 7th Ave stop. You%26#39;ll be on 7th at 53rd - a few blocks away from your hotel if you have wheels. The Airtrain/subway connection is all escalators/elevators so you wont have to carry up/down stairs until you make your final exit from the subway system.

Just make sure you get the Airtrain to Jamaica, not Howard Beach...

of course, if you%26#39;re tired (or if there%26#39;s snow/slush), just jump in a cab. I often find myself wired after long flights and have been taking Airtrain since it started running... But, I typically have just a wheelaboard carry-on and a day pack or handbag.

  • Worst Chinese in Town

Just a warning not to order from Wok Village. We have had their food too many times because it is the only delivery in the area. However, they so often get your order wrong and then they are very nasty to you if you call back to complain or try to get the order rectified. They have no idea what customer service means.

    Worst Chinese in Town

I completely agree. The same thing has happened to us. Plus, the food is so sub par. The place would be out of business anywhere but here.

    Worst Chinese in Town

We have ordered from them about every 6 weeks for over 4 years and have not had any problems. We don%26#39;t use their delivery service but pick up ourselves. Food is generally good - have no complaints.

    UN Building

    Grand Central (%26amp; Juniors Cheesecake)

We%26#39;re in the city for a week for 1 wk. We have requested a BAG so fingers crossed that there will be someone available.

Where in the groups listed above would we best fit in Soho, the Village, Chinatown???

We%26#39;d also like to see the Intrepid Museum, do a circle line tour %26amp; the SATC tour is a must for me!

We don%26#39;t want a packed itinerary because we want time to do some shopping %26amp; time to enjoy anything unexpected that we come across that interests us.

I%26#39;d appreciate anyones comments. Am I being over/under ambitious? Do i even have things grouped correctly together?? Everything looks so close together in my lonely planet guide!!

    Thanks in advance

Would appreciate some itinerary help :)

Sorry forgot to include that the only definite plans we have are a Yankees game on our last night (Fri 29th Jul)

Would appreciate some itinerary help :)

What day of the week are you arriving? Might impact some of your itinerary, but here are a few thoughts:

Tenement Museum - prebook. Do this one morning, explore the Lower East Side for a bit, then head over to Chinatown/Soho %26amp; The Village. Use this time to stroll %26amp; explore the city, you never know what adventures await you.

Federal Reserve - only during the week and you have to reserve.

    www.ny.frb.org/aboutthefed/ny_tours.htm

This is downtown, I would do this maybe the morning of day 4, then head over to TKTS for tickets. You can then take the water taxi to Fulton Ferry, which leaves your off by Grimaldi%26#39;s, and then back over the bridge.

Do the Circle Line/Intrepid on the same day, they are close to each other.

Try to hit TOTR for daytime views, you won%26#39;t see Central Park when it is dark. Or,try for the day/dusk/night views, it is spectacular. You will have plenty of time to look around Rockefeller Central, stop in n St Patricks Cathedral, maybe even time for Grand Central Terminal. These things are closer than you think.

Times Square is much more impressive at night, in my opinion, and once is enough, it is so darn crowded!!!

I have not personally done this tour, but SATC gets excellent reviews from those who reported on it. You many want to do this prior to your exploration of the village, as you get to see lots of it and then can return to the places that interest you.

I think your itinerary is very doable, not jam packed but enough so that you can appreciate what you do, and if you get tired, so you skip something, or maybe something else will appeal to you.

By the way, the UN tour is worth it, I see the building is of interest to you, so if you head over there, check it out.

    www.un.org/tours/pages/gi.htm

Since you do want to do Ellis Island without SOL, check out ellisislandtours.com. This is given by a former Ellis Island Park Ranger and covers a whole lot of ground. I%26#39;ve taken the tour and it is wonderful - and includes wonderful details. There%26#39;s more at the site.

Your itinerary sounds very well put together and doable. I%26#39;m not sure when you are coming to the city, if before the end of September, be prepared for hazy, hot and humid weather - bring or purchase as soon as you get here - sun screen, moist wipes and light hats with visors.

Also I highly recommend you get a couple of small (half liter) bottles of water to carry around with you. I freeze them and then have cold water almost all day long. Refill them with tap water. (And in NYC tap water is excellent.)

Since you%26#39;ll be at Radio City Apartments with a full fridge %26amp; freezer you can easily do this. I usually travel with one too since flights are so terribly dry and stewards don%26#39;t always have enough time to get water for all their passengers.

    Hope you enjoy. Ta. MMM!

You%26#39;ve put together a very doable itinerary and have gotten excellent advice. I%26#39;ll just add that MOMA is closed on Tuesdays (can%26#39;t figure out what day you arrive). I%26#39;m not sure I%26#39;d do 2 museums on the same day, but that%26#39;s a personal preference. I find I can only absorb so much. While your day 5 is certainly doable, those buildings are not really near each other except they%26#39;re all in midtown. YOu could do St. Patrick%26#39;s on the same day as MOMA since it%26#39;s quite close (and both are very close to your hotel). Just a thought.

I%26#39;ll also mention on day 3, you will probably have some time and will be downtown. YOu could have a look in Soho on that day which would be on your way uptown.

I agree that your itinerary sounds good, and totally agree with the the person who commented that Times Square is much better seen at night. Since you seem to be museum fans (like me) consider the Metropolitan Museum which is nothing les than outstanding. It sits along central park, more or less opposite the Natural History museum (another outstanding museum). Walking across Central Park is very pleasant though if it%26#39;s hot you might have a problem.

Then there%26#39;s the Guggenheim, Cooper -Hewit, etc. but if you think you%26#39;ll like MoMA you should also consider the Met

The advice you have gotten already is very good.

One thing you might do is a little bit more clustering for sights that are close together.

MoMA, at 53rd and Fifth, might be done the same day you do St. Pat%26#39;s (51st and Fifth) and Rockefeller Center (across the street from St. Pat%26#39;s). This could also be combined with the southern end of Central Park.

MoMA and Natural History on the same day might be a bit much, although if you really wanted to Museum overload one day you could do the Metropolitan Museum of Art (which has a good modern collection on its own) at Fifth and 81st, and then walk across Central Park to Natural History, which is directly across the park at Central Park West and 81st Street.

The Tenement museum combines nicely with Chinatown or SoHo. You might also want to check out the usually forgotten Old Merchant%26#39;s House museum on East 4th Street to see how the other end of the spectrum lived at the same time.

I would try to do the Federal Reserve the same day I did the WTC, as they are just a couple of blocks apart. Indeed, you could combine all of your downtown things (including the South Street Seaport) into the same day; nothing there is more than a ten minute walk from anything else.

I haven%26#39;t been able to access the internet since I posted so aplogies for delay. Thanks for all your comments. Am gonna make a few changes %26amp; I%26#39;m sure I%26#39;ll have some more questions! Am arriving on Saturday 22nd by the way.

We just returned from our first visit and we loved going to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island but there%26#39;s not really all that much at Ellis Island so I would do both.

Also, be prepared to get lost...we were all the time it seemed. Next time, we%26#39;ll definitely have a compass along. With no horizon, it%26#39;s very easy to get completely turned around.

    Have a great time!

    Hotel Question

My wife, myself and our 1 year old baby would like to stay in a 1 bedroom suite (or any hotel room that has a door that shuts between the living area and bedroom). That is, so we can have a little space to sleep from the baby.

Anyway...we found a 1 bedroom at the Beacon for $225. Do you think we can do better? Nothing fancy, but definitely in a good neighborhood for restaurants, shopping etc...(nothing in the financial district etc...)

Thanks so much. Our dates are December 27th-30th (3 nights)

    Hotel Question

That price is fantastic. You can certainly find nicer hotels with suites, but not at that price, at least not now. There%26#39;s nothing wrong with the Beacon (a bit of faded glory maybe) and the neighborhood%26#39;s very kid friendly.

If it%26#39;s cancellable, you might book it and keep checking travelzoo.com for any specials closer to the date. Sometimes the Affinia hotels (all suites) are on offer there.

    Christmas in the Adirondacks!

My son and husband and I are coming to Lake Placid over the Christmas Holidays. I would love some recommendations for lodging, dining, activities, etc. We would really love to bobsled, sleigh ride and dog sled. Also is it wise to make reservations for dinner etc. in advance and if so how early, October? Could someone recommend a great day spa also. We would really appreciate any help. We would like the full Placid Christmas experience. Thanks!!!

    Christmas in the Adirondacks!

lakeplacid.com/flash/…z-wheretostay.htm This is a great site for Lake Placid. I recommend Crowne Plaza Resort, it%26#39;s really gorgeous and very relaxing. As far as a day spa, I%26#39;m not sure if there is one in that area, none are listed and I dont remember seeing any. As far as dinner reservations, you can reserve the day previous and be just fine. Most restaurants around here dont even reserve often, unless it%26#39;s a huge party, if you do try to reserve early, call back a day or 2 before and verify they still have your reservation. That website has activites, shopping etc so you%26#39;ll find all you want to do through there, other than the spa. Have a great time!

Help getting from JFK to Philly

    Hi everyone

I posted on here last week and you were all so helpful. I am arriving into JFK on Friday and wondered if you had any tips for good transport co%26#39;s to Philadelphia. We don%26#39;t want to have to get the train as we%26#39;ll have too many bags etc, so a reliable, cheap transfer would be ideal.

    Many thanks

Help getting from JFK to Philly

Cheap transfer? Anything from JFK will not be cheap. If you go down to the bottom of this page http://www.panynj.gov/aviation/jgtsfram.htm

you%26#39;ll see some bus/shuttle services but they%26#39;re $50-60 I assume per person, but maybe not.

If you go into Manhattan, you have options of various buses or 2 different train options-Amtrak which is faster but pricier or Septa. Depending on how many of you there are, renting a car and driving might be a better idea.

Help getting from JFK to Philly

Did you look into flying to Philadelphia?

Other than that, or renting a car, your best bet is to pay a airport baggage handler to bring your luggage to the cab line (if it wont fit on the carts you can get in the baggage area), take a cab to Penn Station, NY - go down the escalator to the NY Transit/Amtrak level and ask for a Skycap to help you with your luggage. They can bring the bags right down to the train platform and often onto the train. The Amtrak trains all have huge luggage racks near each doorway. For the price of a tip, someone else is carrying your bags most of the way.

Bring a bicycle like lock to attach your bag/s to the rack so you dont have to sit and watch them.

A ';transfer'; implies a short distance - like from JFK into NY, from your hotel to a train station in the same city, etc. You do know that Philadelphia is about 100 miles (how many KM%26#39;s is that?) away from New York, right? Train, plane or rental car are your only sensible options.

    New York in Mid November

We are in the process of booking our second trip to New York this year and have been considering the 18th to the 25th of November

Can anyone advise what the weather is like and what events take place around this time of year.

    Thanks in advance.

    New York in Mid November

It starts getting cold in Noverber, and we have had snow. The big event that week is Thanksgiving on the 23rd. Big parade, giant baloons, and Santa Claus, it%26#39;s major holiday here and starts the Christmas Season of Shopping and Cheer. Most stores will be closed (resturants open) Then on Friday, the busiest shopping day of the year, often with major sales.

    New York in Mid November

As mentioned, Nov 23 is Thanksgiving and that weekend marks the beginning of the Xmas shopping season. You may find hotels very expensive 23-26 nov.

Weather can be very cold or not so. Go to wunderground.com and scroll down to their trip planner for historic info.

Weather can be anywhere from below freezing to mid 60%26#39;s, with sun, rain, sleet or snow. And 23rd is Thanksgiving. A HUGE holiday in all of the USA - and with the Macy%26#39;s parade in the morning of that day. 90% of all shops and museums are closed, as well as all banks, government stuff and schools. It%26#39;s a holiday for everyone although a lot of restaurants - but not all - are open. Some serve a traditional Thanksgiving meal too - turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, candied sweet potatoes and a veg of some sort. Best to make reservations at someplace you like ahead of time. And, perhaps the best part, 98% of all the Christmas decorations are up in NYC by Thanksgiving and a stroll up or down 5th Ave between 34th and 58th is a fun way to see lots of marvelous displays in the stores - Sacks %26amp; Lord and Taylor being 2 of the really special ones. So - come prepared with layered clothing and enjoy. Ta. MMM!

I didn%26#39;t realise it was Thanksgiving that weekend, It sounds like a good time to be in New York.

Can anyone tell me the best place to watch the parade from and what time to be there for?

Thanks for all your helpful replies.

I can%26#39;t tell you the best place to stand outside to see the parade - I tried once, in the late 80%26#39;s - it was freezing, it was intensely crowded with 10-20 people deep to the front of the crowd to be able to see the parade, I%26#39;m short and couldn%26#39;t see anything! The route begins at at 58th Street and 7th Avenue/Broadway and makes it%26#39;s way downtown to Macy%26#39;s at 34th St.

There are folks who have offices along the route and go there to see from the warmth inside and above the bustle of the crowded streets. The actual performances of the Rockettes and whoever else may be performing happens in front of Macy%26#39;s - and to get there you need to have special tickets. To me the best place is in front of my TV with a cup of coffee or tea, a mimosa or a bloody Mary.

However, the night before - Wednesday evening, all along Central Park West from about West 65th up to West 84th (approx) they blow up the balloons for the parade the next day - and it is fun and not quite as crowded to wander through there.

See link for NYC November daily averages:

    Hi,

Me and my girlfriend were in NYC November last year (18-22 i think). Unfortunatly we missed the parade but the weather was OK, 3 days were sunny but qiute cold (which we soon forgot about with all the walking we did), 1 day was rainy but mild and our last day was cloudy and absolutely flippin%26#39; freezing (it was the wind that made it feel colder than it actually was). So i thnk you take your chances just like here in the UK.

As for beeing in NYC in late November it was fantastic, everywhere was getting ready for christmas with all the major stores trimmed up (saks? was done up like a xmas gift and looked ace).

If you like christmas you will love it.

    Cheers,

    Nick.

MMM510, you%26#39;ve got part of the route right. It actually begins at 77th St. and Central Park West, travels down CPW to Columbus Circle (59th St.) where it turns onto Broadway. It continues on Broadway, through Times Square and then to 34th St., where it turns right to 8th Ave.

The night before the parade, the big character balloons are inflated along the streets bordering the Museum of Natural History, on 77th and 81st Streets. The inflation is a huge event, and seems more densely crowded even than the parade.

I love going to the parade, and have been doing so from infancy, when I%26#39;d ride on my father%26#39;s shoulders for a good view. And it is crowded! I counted 20+ deep last parade. But even if you can%26#39;t see the bands marching, you can sure hear them. And you can see the balloons. If you%26#39;re really determined, people start lining the parade room before 6 a.m. Bring blankets and a pillow to sit on.

Went at the end of November one year and it was freezing cold. No rain or snow but the wiiiiiiind ripped straight through you. Great time to visit but make sure that you are well insulated from the soles of your feet to the top of your head.

    arriving 4th of July Help

We are arriving at Laguardia @ 8:45pm if all goes well... I am wondering if this will cause trouble with getting a cab or getting to the New Yorker Hote?l... Is there any possible way we will get to see the fireworks? We are not checking any bags so we should be out of there fairly quick... What would be your best guess?

    grace

    arriving 4th of July Help

The fireworks start at 9 PM so the only way you may get to see them is coming to Manhattan in the taxi which is not unlikely since they are over the East River. I don%26#39;t know where your hotel is but you may have traffic problems since the FDR Drive (the highway next to the East River) will be closed to traffic from 7 PM to 1 AM. You should have no problem getting a taxi at the airport.

One way to see the fireworks is to have the taxi take you just as far as Roosevelt Island or Long Island City so you can watch from there. After the fireworks, head into the city.

fireworks seem to go on all weekend (obviously not the official ones), so chances are you%26#39;ll get to see SOME all night! i saw a nice display already on saturday night.

We will be seeing the 3:00 matinee of Hairspray (I believe at the Neil Simon theater), and would like to eat post-theater. We are looking for something casual as we are bringing our three children, but do not want to eat at a chain restaurant.

I hate to say it, but Ellen%26#39;s Stardust diner would be very convenient and is very kid friendly with singing waiters. It will be packed before a matinee and food isn%26#39;t great though. Art Cafe is much better food a block away. Vynl on 9th ave. is another good option.

I should say the kids are 20, 17 and 9... would like good food, just not too fancy.. getting boys to dress is tough, and singing waiters would probably put them under the table!

I%26#39;d suggest Joe Allen on ';Restaurant Row'; (W. 46th between 8th-9th Aves.). It%26#39;s a casual American restaurant and a big theater hangout. You%26#39;re likely to see the stars of the show you%26#39;ve just seen. They%26#39;re very popular though, you%26#39;ll need reservations.

Maria Pia is a nice, casual Italian on W. 51st St. between 8th-9th Aves.

Another casual American restaurant is Eatery, on the corner of 9th Ave. and 53rd St.

LOL. Kids indeed. Most places are casual enough these days. They should look neat anyway. What kind of food do you want?

In response to nywhiz, the kids and hubby like all American fare.. burgers, wraps, steak, and Italian... I had read a good review of Maria Pia which peaked my interest (and thanks, Bettina).. I am making the kids eat Indian another night which will be an adventure for them. They clean up well, and we can get them to wear decent shirts, but probably not anything that resembles dress pants!

Bobby Van%26#39;s is a good steak place that%26#39;s opened not far from your theater at 135 W. 50th Street Bet. 6th and 7th Avenue, New York City

Not cheap, but good steak. Del Frisco%26#39;s is another good steak house not far (49th %26amp; 6th) and I think they may have a prix fixe dinner.

Trattoria Dell %26#39;Arte is a great, fun Italian on 7th ave. %26amp; 56 st. so just a bit north of the theater. They have good thin crust pizza, an awesome veal parmigiana and are known for their antipasto. For something much more casual, there%26#39;s an Angelo%26#39;s pizza in the Ed Sullivan theater (where Letterman is done) on Broadway b/w 53-54 st. They have things other than pizza too.

May I offer a suggestion on the Indian. Instead of dinner, try a buffet lunch. Most of the Indian restaurants do a set price all you can eat lunch buffet for around $12-15/person. It allow you to taste a lot of different things and it%26#39;s great value, especially with hungry teens. That way they won%26#39;t be so intimidated about what to order. I thought the buffet at Utsav was very good and I%26#39;ve heard the one at the Bay Leaf is also good.

And I realize Bettina hasn%26#39;t mentioned her favorite Italian, Carmine%26#39;s, a good choice for lots of hungry guys. ;) Huge portions so don%26#39;t order too much.

    That%26#39;s a major lapse!

We went to a matinee of Hairspray and ate at Gallagher%26#39;s before the show. They had a price-fixe lunch for 20.00 (a couple of years ago) and that included filet mignon. It was very good. I don%26#39;t know if the price-fixe is still available. They are located on the same block as Hairspray.
