We are planning to fly into Albany %26amp; go to Cooperstown %26amp; the surrounding area for 5 days. Besides the Hall of Fame, what would you suggest doing with a 17 year old boy within a 3 hour radius of Cooperstown (or Albany).
We may fly into Rochestor or Syracuse if this makes a difference with recommendations %26amp; we are planning our trip for the 1st week in August.
Thank you.
I tried a post earlier - but I don%26#39;t think it worked - so I hope this isn%26#39;t a duplicate.
Albany to Cooperstown with 17 yr old
If you%26#39;re a baseball nut there%26#39;s no reason to go anywhere else, if not, then there%26#39;s Howe Caverns, The Soccer Hall of fame and The Boxing Hall of fame all with in an hour of Cooperstown. Dining experiences are sparse once you leave Albany or Syacuse.
Albany has the state museum and very little else. The area is rural and scenic, little towns with little to do. If it%26#39;s entertainment you%26#39;re looking for, it%26#39;s of a self motivated variety. Hiking and kayaking are suberb here, especially after all the rain (flooding).
Albany to Cooperstown with 17 yr old
As a local that spends alot of time in Albany, I can tell you we actually have quite a bit to do. Check out Albany.org. It is the capitol of New York, not just a small town with nothing to do lol. We have the U.S.S. Slater, a Navy ship from WW2 that you can tour with an actual Navy person. Our tour guide was this adorable older man who actually was on this ship in WW2 and he is now retired, but volunteers to do tours. He will at times use language that moms of little ones won%26#39;t love, but my 10 year old daughter, my hubby and I laughed alot. Beware of having ot go down stairs, the kind you see on real Navy ships, like a ladder but it%26#39;s attached to the wall, so you have to face the wall as you go down. It was really amazing, we had the best time! We have different things going on in the Park near the State buildings, again check out www.albany.org for an events list. We have the Aquaducks, of course museums, but there is more to do. We have alot of placesto eat, from Chinese places that make you feel you walked into China, to several Indian/ Middle Eastern Restaurants that make you feel you walked into India/Pakistan. Very colorful, but spicey food. We have several community centers for all different people. Italian/American, Indian, Polish, Irish.. you can see what they have going on, such as a bazaar in the park, or a dinner party at their center. Cooperstown, of course is amazing in itself and worth a 2 day trip, if you love Sports, I do I do! Baseball Hall of Fame, the Bat Museum where you can have a bat made specially for you, my hubby has 2! If you go to the Cooperstown Forum we just had some good posts with things to do and details that might help you. As the p.p. mentioned, we have Howe Caverns nearby also, which is an amazing cave below ground that you can tour. I went into plenty of detail on that also under Cooperstown forum, if you can%26#39;t find it let me know I%26#39;ll repost here for you. We also have Saratoga Springs which is about 25 mins north of Albany, with a horse race track that%26#39;s great fun if you like races, and a car race track too for modified racing. I wrote some overview/inside pages under the Saratoga Springs forum for more info on that if you%26#39;re interested. Have a great trip!!
