9 nights in NY - Where to stay, cheap but clean?

We are a young couple (mid 20%26#39;s) going to NY for our first time.

We%26#39;ve decided to stay for 9 nights (july 7th to 16th), and need to find a place to stay for that period of time.

Ideally this should cost a maximum of $100 per night, but we could settle for less ;)

We can%26#39;t really decide what%26#39;s best - finding a motel in New Jersey (like Super 8 in North Bergen) or a cheap bed and breakfast in the northern part of Manhattan.

I imagine that 9 nights should be enough to see most of what we want to see in NY, so location isn%26#39;t everything (although it must be quite %26#39;safe%26#39;)...

Any good advice will be greatly appreciated. It%26#39;s really hard to plan all this when you%26#39;ve got no clue about distances and good/bad neighborhoods.

Thanks in advance

Kasper

If you look in new jersey check out New Jersy transit%26#39;s web site for travel info. Some places have limited (on none) mass transit options to New York City (Manhattan).

$100/night is very cheap for New York. Average rates are about $200-250+tax

(an $85/night room comes to $100 with tax)

Thanks - I will check that website... There%26#39;s no point in staying in Jersey, if we%26#39;ll have to spend all day traveling to and from NY.

I know that $100 is a very low budget for NY, but we%26#39;re not asking for anything special - all we need is a clean room with a bed and A/C.

We%26#39;re not planning on spending much time in the room (except for sleep of course).

Here%26#39;s a link to the Super 8 we%26#39;ve looked at - it has quite good reviews, and the price is very fair.:

9 nights in New Jersey? You%26#39;re kidding, right? What a huge hassle getting back and forth. The only place in New Jersey I%26#39;d consider for a young couple for that length of time is Jersey City where you%26#39;ve got a PATH train and a ferry as transport options. Some people have actually reported getting either the Hyatt Regency or the Doubletree Suites in Jersey City by bidding on Priceline for as little as $65-85/night. I just don%26#39;t know if a stay of that long would win a Priceline bid. If you don%26#39;t know about Priceline, go to biddingfortravel.com or betterbidding.com

You%26#39;d be better staying in a hostel in Manhattan. Do you need a private bathroom? The Westside YMCA I think has some private rooms. Hostelling International is supposed to be the best hostel in the city but they don%26#39;t have any private rooms for your dates (you%26#39;ve waited a bit late, don%26#39;t you think?) Look on hostelz.com for more options and reviews.

You could contact citylightsnewyork.com and see if they have any hosted apts. (you stay with someone) that would fit your budget.

you could try the East Village Bed and Coffee - shared baths but nice www.bedandcoffee.com might be a bit late in the day though I know the owner gets booked up pretty quick

There are a number of other options I haven%26#39;t mentioned b/c they%26#39;re over $100 but some include breakfast and all would be far more central and wouldn%26#39;t require the sort of traveling you%26#39;re talking about. Think about if you%26#39;re staying a distance in New Jersey, you%26#39;re limiting your nightlife OR you%26#39;ll be making 2 roundtrips a day back and forth if you want to do anything at night.

The Pan American is a hotel/motel in Queens (a part of NYC) that%26#39;s accessible by subway or bus. That would be a better option than NJ. The online rate for your dates is $113. I think it might include breakfast. This is not a glamorous place or a fancy neighborhood, but, imo, a better option to North Bergen, NJ.

Second Home on Second is a b %26amp; b in Manhattan that might be affordable.

See, this is exactly what i mean ;o)

Having read the reviews of Super 8, I thought going to and from NY would be a snap. Guess not.

I know we%26#39;re a bit late, but every time I%26#39;ve decided to look for accomodation, I%26#39;ve ended up all confused and abandoning it again. I just discovered this great place today, otherwise I would have written weeks ago.

I think we might go for priceline.com - I%26#39;m just a bit worried that we%26#39;ll end up in a dump somewhere, but that might not be an issue? For example I was just about to book at ';The Marrakech'; (which looks very nice on the website) earlier today, when I read all the terrible reviews here on tripadvisor. So I%26#39;m just afraid that we%26#39;ll be stuck with a similar hotel via Priceline?

By the way, I already signed up for the waiting list at bedandcoffee.com, but I don%26#39;t think there%26#39;s any chance of getting lucky. I think thery%26#39;re fully booked for the next couple of months.

Have you looked into the Econolodge in Times Square? I believe that it%26#39;s a newer place and it%26#39;s supposed to be affordable.

Just thought I%26#39;d throw it out there...

Last time I went, we rented an apartment through a private person on Craigslist. We were lucky to get something great in the $150/night range, but some people may not be comfortable trusting their money to someone they don%26#39;t know. We were very fortunate to connect with a lovely lady and her lavish Midtown 1 Bdrm...

When I was young and traveling in Europe, whenever you would arrive at a train station there would be a kiosk where you could find last minute rooms - hotels, b%26amp;b%26#39;s, private homes, etc would let them know what they had available, and a traveler would just go up and pick something they liked (similar to the TKTS booth).

Does that still exist in Europe? The reason I ask is that it seems the vast majority of posters here who seem to be arriving very shortly with no accommodations secured seem to be from outside the US...maybe they expect there to be a similar service at US airports and train stations.

And maybe it would be a great idea if there was?

Check the Herald Square Hotel (www.heraldsquarehotel.com)--you can book a very small but workable room with a private bathroom for $99-109 a night (plus taxes). Keep your fingers crossed for availabilty. Other rooms go for $159 and up.

Some other suggestions:

Cosmopolitan Hotel (www.cosmohotel.com) in Tribeca (way downtown) has loft rooms for $129 plus taxes. The place is immaculate and is very very close to subway lines.

The Park Savoy on W 58th is also an option. I%26#39;ve had good and bad experiences with them, but the rooms are reasonable

If you don%26#39;t mind shared bathrooms, consider the Larchmont Hotel or the Chelsea Lodge--they both have great reputations and don%26#39;t think they go above $125 per night.

The time frame (your dates only being two to three weeks away) could hurt but there%26#39;s no harm in looking.
